Asha Chumber, a finance manager from London
Asha Chumber on Jeopardy! UK
Michael Hutchinson, a maths teacher from Reading (4-day total: £23,926)
Michael Hutchinson on Jeopardy! UK

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

Today, Michael Hutchinson, the Reading maths teacher, attempts to win his 5th game; if he does win, he would become the first player in this UK version of the show to win five. In his four games, he’s already won £23,926—£4,425 more than Keshava Guha, the show’s first 4-time winner. However, today’s challengers Asha Chumber and Dan Adler want to stop Michael from winning money and win some themselves! Interestingly, Dan does have a known history of being a strong quizzer, so Michael might have his work cut out for him today!

This brings me to one point of clarification for our new UK viewers: the winner of each game wins their total score at the end of the game, and can return as long as they keep winning. So, regardless of what happens, Michael will win at least £23,926; that money can’t be taken from him at this point.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • If £30,551 was converted into an American performance (taking the American board values into account, it would be equivalent to $171,849), it would be 8th all time in terms of money won through 5 games.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Michael £5,625 Dan £3,275 Asha £250)

Michael: Standard cover bet over Dan is £926. (Actual bet: £1,000)

Asha: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: £50)

Dan: Bet between £1,425 and £2,774. (Actual bet: £2,700)

9 Comments on "Jeopardy! UK Game Recap – Thursday, January 18, 2024"

  1. As I can’t math very well is 8th all time in American winnings factoring in all past American winners only play 2 rounds of jeopardy and not 3?

    • Yes, it takes into account that an American board has $54,000 worth of material on it, compared with the British £9,600 (a factor of 5.625).

      • Just think of all the crazy possibilities if someone like James Holzhauer had 3 rounds and 4 daily doubles to work with! The possibilities are endless

        • Honestly? Not as much as you might think. Plus, his run might have ended sooner! Look at how much Dan caught up in Double Jeopardy today—a lot of challengers have actually been finding their timing on the third board.

          • 100% agreed people would have eventually caught on to James way of playing at some point. All the added variables are fun to look at and ponder. Also it’s crazy how much I’m liking this UK version. I watch it before I head to bed as it’s so chill.

      • Is 5.625 the correct factor to be using here? It seems to result from an apples to oranges comparison (or more precisely here, dollars to sterling). I think the proper factor would be 4.43 (converting £9,600 to $12,188, and diving $54,000 by that).

But I think your ranking is correct; using that factor converts Michael’s total to an equivalent of £135,359, which becomes about $171,800.

        • With all due respect, adding an exchange rate only confuses the process.

There are 54,000 points on the board in US.
There are 9,600 points on the board in the UK.

          • Using the “points” framing is helpful here, because it shows how to accomplish the same calculation without resorting to an exchange rate, as opposed to employing one twice. Initially, I thought, don’t you HAVE to convert to dollars to properly compare a British score with American ones? Indeed, one does not.

          • Besides which the exchange rate varies over time and especially when comparing past winners, that covers a lot of time.
