Warning: This page may contain spoilers for the January 23, 2024 game of Jeopardy! UK, especially for those of you watching delayed or on-demand. This page will be updated during each commercial break as the show airs.

Today’s contestants:

Sarah Trevarthen, an environment & safety consultant from Bury
Sarah Trevarthen on Jeopardy! UK
Anthony Fish, a housing enforcement manager from Pontypool
Anthony Fish on Jeopardy! UK
Emma Laslett, a disability benefits officer from Milton Keynes (2-day total: £9,024)
Emma Laslett on Jeopardy! UK

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

We’re now onto Day 3 of Twitter in the United Kingdom generally showing how collectively terrible they are, as 2-day champion Emma Laslett returns, having won £9,024 up to this point. Remember, when a player loses on Jeopardy!, they take home their winnings from all of their previous wins.

Emma said on Twitter that her opponents today are “big guns”—Sarah won the 2022 Brain of Britain competition on the BBC, while Anthony and Sarah have actually competed against each other before—they were both Grand Finalists in the 2021-22 season of Mastermind; Anthony finished fourth in that final and Sarah second.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

4 Comments on "Jeopardy! UK Game Recap – Tuesday, January 23, 2024"

  1. I assume that even by now they are airing episodes that were recorded before any episodes had ever been shown. I say this because I have observed that ALL of the UK FJ!s have been either very short or pretty short (like “green” or just a 4-digit year). I believe this one today [La La Land] may be the first 3-word response, but it is short, nonetheless. Therefore, I would have expected that ‘Everything, Everywhere, All At Once’ was probably too long to be the desired response. I guessed ‘Oppenheimer’ [wrong, 13]. I believe even this simple clue had a bit of obfuscation to it because of the year — The current crop of movies qualified for Oscar nominations for the 2024 Oscars are 2023 movies and if one did not know [and I didn’t], they might think the nominations were made in December 2023 (but they weren’t, it was just today, January 23rd, so had not even been announced prior to the taping of this episode).

American Jeopardy! is known for frequently having clues related to VERY current events — like “How did they even know to have that one?” [I suspect they have contacts in publishers’ offices, etc. so they get heads up about upcoming news.] Of course, UK Jeopardy! certainly knew when this year’s nominations would be, but it is kind of amazing that they scheduled this episode/clue to precisely coincide since being in Britain, I assume they would not be in a position to possibly get extra ad sales [TV commercials for movies still in theaters?] for their syndicated stations.

I think you’re right, Lisa, a report last August said that all 20 episodes had already been recorded at that time. I agree it’s unlikely that the ITV network which shows Jeopardy! in the UK will have been able to sell any ads for movies. I watch the show on catch-up on their streaming app ITVX and there were no special ads on it today.

By the way, very well said again, Andy. Really appreciate your support for the British show and all its contestants.

  3. To clarify, Sarah beat Emma in the 2022 Brain of Britain final (on BBC Radio 4). Was surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the episode.

Completely ignored the fact that Anthony & Sarah were in the same Mastermind final. And Emma was in the final the previous year.

RE: Final Jeopardy’s – I don’t think the questions are written with deliberately short answers in mind, but (IMO) they are deliberately pitched with fewer ins to make it less likely we will get huge jackpot winners (same as how lots of Daily Doubles have been “name that year” because it’s so easy to be slightly off).

  4. Final Jeopardy! sounded like it might have been ADR’d to include the “As of 2023” bit – maybe even the day of transmission?!

I note that Fry didn’t mention that bit when reading the clue back at the end.
