Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, February 1, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the February 1, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Geography) for Thursday, February 1, 2024 (Season 40, Game 104):

The first city in Australia with a municipal government, this state capital bears the name of a queen

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Michael Menkhus, a data analyst from Kansas City, Missouri
Michael Menkhus on Jeopardy!
Andy Tirrell, a political science & international relations professor from San Diego, California
Andy Tirrell on Jeopardy!
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Juveria Zaheer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today is Day 1 of a two-game total-point final, with the winner at the end of tomorrow advancing to the Tournament of Champions. For those who don’t remember, today’s final score gets added to tomorrow’s final score in order to determine the overall winner of the match.

Michael has had the best time on the buzzer of the three players in this final, but also the fewest number of attempts. Which, like the recent Celebrity Jeopardy final, is usually a recipe for a very close matchup. I think that most watchers are thinking that Juveria would be favored to win this match based on her own strong play, but as semifinal #1 showed, these matches are not played on paper, and Andy is very capable of pulling out a victory.

Correct response: What is Adelaide?

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, was the first Australian city to receive municipal governance when it did so in 1840. It was named after Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV of England. It is currently Australia’s fifth-most populous city, after Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.

To me, this seems like the sort of reasonably straightforward clue that will reward any player willing to take a chance on a big Final Jeopardy wager in Game 1 of a final, especially someone that considers geography to be a strong category.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Thursday, February 1, 2024 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Mountain High; From The French; Bonds Of Commonality; Rap Words & Phrases; Nonfiction; I Like The Cut Of Your Job)

Buoyed by a strong performance in RAP WORDS & PHRASES, and the Daily Double in that category, Michael got off to the best start in the final. After the break, a couple of incorrect responses from Juveria put her in third place going into Double Jeopardy.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Michael 6 correct 0 incorrect
Andy 4 correct 0 incorrect
Juveria 4 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Michael still thinks this tournament may be a put-on.
Andy is using the toilet paper roll dispenser for buzzer practice.
Juveria thinks Ray Lalonde is a Toronto icon.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Michael 11 correct 1 incorrect
Andy 7 correct 1 incorrect
Juveria 9 correct 3 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Michael $7,200
Andy $3,800
Juveria $2,400

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Follow The World Leader; Brainy Quotes; 2-Letter Words; I’M So Wavy; “N” Science; Canadians Invade Our Living Rooms!)

The player who controls the Daily Doubles controls the game. And that definitely happened with Juveria today, going from $2,400 to $22,400 in the first six clues of Double Jeopardy, thanks to a pair of True Daily Doubles. While Michael and Andy played valiantly, Juveria was well over $30,000 going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Juveria 23 correct 3 incorrect
Michael 20 correct 2 incorrect
Andy 11 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Juveria $34,000
Michael $16,400
Andy $7,400

Andy was the only player to get Final Jeopardy correct today, and his bet has put him back into contention going into Day 2! Juveria’s large bet means she still leads, but her “effective lead” is only $2,600 over Andy (and $10,000 over Michael).

Tonight’s results:

Andy $7,400 + $7,400 = $14,800 (What is Adelaide?)
Michael $16,400 – $16,400 = $0 (What is Alice Springs?)
Juveria $34,000 – $14,000 = $20,000 (What is Melbourne?)

Today's Jeopardy! final scores (for the February 1, 2024 game). Juveria Zaheer finished with $20,000, Andy Tirrell finished with $14,800, and Michael Menkhus with $0.

15 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, February 1, 2024"

  1. Never heard of Queen Adelaide, but since Adelaide is the only Australian state capital with a woman’s name it didn’t matter. I know it better as the heart of Australian wine country.

    • Actually Sydney is also a woman’s name, although in that case I’m pretty sure the city name came first.

      • Besides, I’ve never heard of a Queen Sydney.

        • I never heard of Queen Adelaide (or at least don’t remember having done so).

          • Excepting Camilla, I had never heard of any of the Queen Consorts, though of course Elizabeth II’s mother (known to me as “The Queen Mother”) had been one until her husband’s death. And I guess Henry VIII’s actual wives had been Queen Consorts, I just never thought about it. But Adelaide was not one of those few and was not even one of the few capitals in Australia I could recall.

      • In my first grade class was a boy named Sydney. One of my girl friends whispered to me one day that her name in the class was actually her middle name and her first name was the SAME as HIS! Turns out her first name was Cindy.

  2. As a kid, we learned about Australian cities and their history when those were Test Cricket venues.

    That made it relatively easy.

  3. Though I never heard of queen adelaide but the city in Australia sounds like a great place to visit in the near future. Playing cricket is always my thing.

  4. I got this instantly because just last night, I did a Sporcle history quiz that included it. It may have taken me longer to parse had I not, but there were only two choices: Adelaide and Sydney. The other five – Brisbane, Perth, Darwin, Hobart, and Melbourne (Canberra excepted since it’s like DC in the USA) – weren’t queens. Melbourne was a lord, so maybe Juveria thought that his daughter married a king? Can’t defend Alice Springs since I have no idea where it came from. (Yes, I knew all seven from memory, and I’m American.)

Smart bets today. If Juveria got it right (and Michael still didn’t), this would pretty much be over, even though the other two bet all the marbles like they should have. Juveria is scary when she gets two Daily Double conversions in a row. If the guys want to have a shot, they need to keep them out of her hands and bet big. We’ll see how it goes!

    • Why is Sydney one of your two choices? Is there an obscure Queen Sydney I’m missing?

      • No. What I’m saying is that such a possibility exists since Sydney with a “Y” is a girl’s name. It’s just a matter of realizing that it’s a red herring in 30 seconds.

Geography, like many Final Jeopardy categories is hit, or, miss with me. This was a miss.
I’ve heard of Adelaide, but didn’t know that it was named for a queen. This would be a straightforward Final if you knew Adelaide is a woman’s name, or, know something about Australian history, which I thought Juveria might.
For the click bait people complaining about a Canadian category with a Canadian play, game boards are selected in a blind draw with representatives of ABC (considered Jeopardy’s home network) in attendence. When the board for today’s game was selected, NO ONE had an idea at Juveria would be one of the contestantw, just like any category where one contestant, because of their profession, might have more knowledge,

  6. For FJ all I could think of was Victoria. Clearly wrong! 🙂 Quite the game tonight. Andy being the only one to get FJ correct made tomorrow night’s game more interesting.

It seemed to me that Andy appeared a tad frustrated that he wasn’t getting in on the buzzer.

Should be fun tomorrow night! Let’s do this!

    • That was the only possible name I could think of, too, mostly because I was only thinking of ruling Queens, not consorts. I was pretty sure there wasn’t a capital in Australia by that name (though I am actually surprised that there isn’t) but would have put that rather than nothing (especially in case I was wrong about there not being one).

  7. Another case of Jeopardy! being just ahead of current events! With the announcement of Charles III having cancer there is already internet “news” [click-bait] titled ‘If Camilla outlives Charles what will her title be?’ In one they say “the last time the Queen Dowager title was used was when Queen Adelaide outlived her husband, King William IV, in 1837”.

So if life or Jeopardy! episodes had been flipped just a few days, we would have probably ALL known the correct response to February 1st’s FJ!
