Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, February 14, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the February 14, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Broadway Plays) for Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (Season 40, Game 113):

Rita Moreno & Sally Struthers were the first to star in the female version of this comedy, their characters becoming Olive & Florence

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Elliott Kim, a television editor from Los Angeles, California
Elliott Kim on Jeopardy!
Ilhana Redzovic, an investment associate from Chicago, Illinois
Ilhana Redzovic on Jeopardy!
Vince Bacani, a risk manager from Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Vince Bacani on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After yesterday’s game saw one of the best duels in the 40-year history of the show between Kat Jepson and Long Nguyen, I have to wonder what today’s game will do for an encore! I have to say that I am not expecting Vince Bacani, Ilhana Redzovic, and Elliott Kim to light up the scoreboard as much as Kat and Long did, but I am expecting to see a strongly contested three-way battle in today’s matchup.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Twenty years after it first debuted, Neil Simon created a revised version of his famous play The Odd Couple, with Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar becoming Olive Madison (Moreno) and Florence Ungar (Struthers). Interestingly, the poker game in the original version became Trivial Pursuit in the 1985 play. The play ran for 295 performances.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Also A Magazine Title; Low Tech; The Composer Conducts; 5 For The Road; I Ran; So Far Away)

Vince found an early Daily Double in this one; this led to the start of a spirited battle between him and Ilhana over the first 15 clues.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Vince 6 correct 1 incorrect
Ilhana 5 correct 1 incorrect
Elliott 2 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Elliott lost on the fourth of July.
Ilhana felt like Big Bird in a meme during her audition.
Vince went on Yogesh Raut’s podcast.

While both Vince and Ilhana got to 11 correct responses in this half of the round, Ilhana had a couple of incorrect responses in this segment, which allowed Vince to extend his lead. Meanwhile, Elliott might want to avoid Texas, after he responded that Emmitt Smith was with the Cardinals in 1995. (Emmitt didn’t join the Cards until nearly a decade later.)

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Vince 11 correct 1 incorrect
Ilhana 11 correct 3 incorrect
Elliott 5 correct 2 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Snakes In A Book; “American” Organizations; Tough 10-Letter Words; The Air That I Breathe; 1970s Movies; Those Meddling Kid Kings & Queens)

Both Daily Doubles came out very early in this one. While Elliott got his incorrect, Vince picked up $5,000 on his, and that forced Ilhana to have to battle back to avoid Vince from having a runaway game going into Final!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Vince 18 correct 3 incorrect
Ilhana 21 correct 6 incorrect
Elliott 12 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Tonight’s results:

Elliott $4,600 – $1 = $4,599 (What is Happy Valentine’s Day EK <3 HK)
Ilhana $10,600 – $10,600 = $0 (What is the Two Gentlemen of Verona?)
Vince $16,600 + $5,000 = $21,600 (What is The Odd Couple?) (Semi-Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Ilhana was one of my favorite champions from last season; thus, while I’m happy to see another Canadian win, I’m also disappoointed that a personal favorite player of mine lost.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Vince $16,600 Ilhana $10,600 Elliott $4,600)

Vince: Standard cover bet over Ilhana is $4,601. Because of the evenly spaced scores, I’d recommend just sticking with that bet today, just in case Ilhana accidentally underbets by $1. (Actual bet: $5,000)

Ilhana: If this was regular play, I’d suggest $1,400 exactly. However, because there’s no monetary difference between second and third, you might as well go all in from this position and force a cover bet out of Vince. (Actual bet: $10,600)

Elliott: Your only hope here is if Vince and Ilhana both bet too much. Go all in and pray to your deity of choice. (Actual bet: $1)

Updated CWC Group 2 odds:

Alex +460
Kat +480
Vince +590
Mira +810
Deb +840
Sriram +980
Taylor +980

17 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, February 14, 2024"

  1. I saw Broadway and my mind thought musical (despite clue saying play), and seeing Olive as one of the names, I guessed ‘Oliver’. I still remember the opening line of the Odd Couple television show (which I watched with my family weekly). “On November 13, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence; that request came from his wife”

    • The Klassic TV show ‘The Odd Couple’ is currently being broadcast on the CatchyTV Network [2 episodes beginning at 5 p.m. here in Philadelphis]!!

  2. “What is ‘The Odd Couple’?” I got this one easily. Even though I didn’t know that there had been a female version of the comedy, I was able to figure out “Olive” for “Oscar” and “Florence” for “ Felix”. It seems like a pretty straightforward Final to me, but, one never knows.

    • Hi RedRose, I just wrote you a brief note under your comment for yesterday’s game in the Tuesday, February 13 Comments section. Cheers! P.S. Your screen name is perfect for today, Valentine’s Day. 💘

  3. “The female version“ and “comedy” gave me the answer to this one even though I was unaware of the production.

    • Ditto for me, but with thinking the same thing as RedRose had about the O and F names making me feel a little more confident than I would have if not given the names.

  4. Maybe Elliott (per your comments, Andy) mistook Emmitt for Ozzie. Ozzie Smith was with the Cardinals in 1995 – though, baseball Cardinals.

  5. Bill Vollmer | February 14, 2024 at 6:07 pm |

I got this Final Jeopardy as soon as the answer was reveled, Ken reading. I THINK that I had heard of this version of Simon’s show, and, that’s how I got it. Deducing Olive for Oscar and Florence for Felix, certainly would’ve worked for others.
I’d read somewhere that due to some alledged acts it’s name sake had done, the Audubon Society had changed it to one meaning the study of birds. But like today’s players I would have a hard time coming up with the correct response. I don’t know if I could come as close as they did!

    • Your second paragraph confuses me. The Audubon Society changed what? And what does ornithology have to do with the clue?

      • Apologies if your comment refers to a different clue from today’s show. The second half was pre-empted due to reporting of the shooting in Kansas City.

    • I take it you are confusing the National Audubon Society with the American Ornithological Society? They are two completely separate organizations. All three players were thinking of the correct organization, just could not come up with the correct pronunciation of ornithological (and could not remember if they needed to try to say ornithological or ornithology).

The controversy about John James Audubon concerns his ties to slavery, which is reason enough to drop in our esteem, but I feel like the way you worded it made it seem like it had been discovered that he was a pedophile or something.

The American Ornithological Society changing birds’ names has to do with the people those birds had been named for (and in some cases due to other aspects of their original name, similar to the name Squaw Valley being changed recently).

      • Bill Vollmer | February 15, 2024 at 6:54 pm |

I was unaware the National Audubon Society and the American Ornithological Society were different organizations. I said alledged bad acts because my incorrect memory didn’t extend to what caused the controversey about Audubon, or, if it had been proved.
Still glad that even if I was wrong about the NAS, and, AOS being the same, that I didn’t have to come up with Ornithological.

  6. This FJ was easy easy for me. I saw a dinner theater production of the all-female version years ago. The original male version is better, though.

  7. My FJ response was correct, but I incorrectly thought that Elliott (being a television editor) would be the most likely to get it right.

  8. I wouldn’t have wanted to bet much money on FJ, as this category isn’t a strong point for me, but as soon as Ken read the clue and I saw it on the screen, I just immediately blurted out “The Odd Couple.” It just made sense to me. Now 2 for 3 the week, which is a minor miracle in itself.

Retro congrats to Vince! Good luck in your upcoming Semifinal game. I had Ilhana winning and now my picks are 2 of 8. I have David Bederman tomorrow and I hope that I haven’t jinxed him.

2 days to the Semifinals and 9 days to the start of the Tournament of Champions. We have some great Jeopardy coming up folks! I can’t wait for the fun!
