Warning: This page contains spoilers for the February 16, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Theater) for Friday, February 16, 2024 (Season 40, Game 115):

A 1955 play review noted “restless Delta folk” & “lives as uncomfortable & insecure as the proverbial” this title

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Mira Hayward, a podcast host from Portland, Oregon
Mira Hayward on Jeopardy!
Vince Bacani, a risk manager from Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Vince Bacani on Jeopardy!
Sriram Krishnan, a consultant from Falls Church, Virginia
Sriram Krishnan on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

I also have a couple of thoughts about the categories today as I play J!6 every morning on the Jeopardy! website before writing this preview. First of all, I absolutely loved the sixth clue in THAT’S GOT 2 HYPHENS; there are certainly some people in this community who need to be reminded about what that clue is. (If you know, you know.) Secondly, and more pertinently to game play, I’m sure Vince is going to feel as though he hit the jackpot with a CANADIAN GEOGRAPHY category in Double Jeopardy. (And as I always say, contestants and game boards are chosen randomly and independently of each other, the people picking the boards have no idea who the contestants are and vice versa; it’s simple “luck of the draw” and is the overall fairest way for the show to operate.)

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a famous Tennessee Williams play, set in the Mississippi Delta area, specifically in the plantation home of cotton tycoon Big Daddy Pollitt. The play focuses on the relationships in Pollitt’s family, including his son Brick and Brick’s wife, Maggie (the Cat).

The 1955 review was from the New York Times review of the original Broadway production, which controversially won the Pulitzer for Drama that year over Clifford Odets’ The Flowering Peach. At the Tonys, Barbara Bel Geddes (who TV audiences may remember for portraying Miss Ellie on Dallas for many years) was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her role as Maggie.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I can’t help but think the show is now taunting Newfoundlanders with their constant mispronunciation of the province name. Once again: Newfoundland rhymes with Disneyland.
  • “Niá:wen” is Mohawk for “Thank you”.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

19 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, February 16, 2024"

  1. I guessed “What is ‘Raisin In The Sun’?” It didn’t really fit the clue but it was all I could think of. I just didn’t want to draw a blank. Three out of five this week.

    • Hi RedRose, Thank you for letting me know that you read my 2 previous notes. I actually got “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” correct. We had to read the whole play in my high school drama class & act out 1 of the monologues from the play. I still remember part of my monologue, even after so many years, because I had to try to memorize the whole thing, and to perform it with a Southern accent in front of the whole class. Traumatic for a high school kid. 😪

  2. I got the playwright correct but the wrong play. Thinking of a play set in the south, the first one that came to mind was “A Streetcar Named Desire”.

    • My first thought was ‘Death of a Salesman’ but I believe I had the setting mixed up with ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. My next thought was ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ and I was very confident that DID fit.

  3. As a huge fan of Tennessee Williams, I had no trouble with this one. 1955 was the giveaway. Williams once claimed that this was his favorite of all his plays, and I am inclined to agree. Lots of action on stage. Does anyone remember the Mad Magazine parody in which Big Daddy became Big Fat Daddy?

  4. Kudos to Vince for getting ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ correct!

I was surprised (as Ken seemingly was) that Vince, the Quebecois, didn’t get the Montreal question? Did Mira give the prefered/correct pronounciation for Newfoundland? My ear doen’t discern the difference. (I understand Andy”s complaint, though I can’t think of one right off the top of my head, I’m sure that there is at least one place here in the US, whose name is constantly misprounced.)
A four day streak getting Final Jeopardy right! The quote from the review used in the answer, was enough for me to say “What is “A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof?” with hardly any thought.
Are they really going to start the T of C on a Friday? Or, will there be some sort of exhibition/pratice game, like there was last year?

    • Robert J. Fawkes | February 16, 2024 at 7:03 pm |

Hi, Bill. One place that comes to mind that is constantly being mispronounced is the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania. There’s a Schuylkill Parkway, too, to give more opportunities for mispronunciation. Does that count?

      • Robert J. Fawkes | February 16, 2024 at 7:06 pm |

Forgot to mention, another one that comes to mind is Louisville. 🙂

      • Bill Vollmer | February 16, 2024 at 9:25 pm |

I’d think that your example is a good one/ I lnow I would have to guess how to prounce Schuykill, and, probably be wrong.
One place I thought of AFTER I posted my comment was Mackinac Island in Michigan, correctly pronounced mackinaw. But it’s not exactly analogus, the prefered/correct pronnuciation of Newfoundland is more an inflection (thinkI’m using the right term. Andy keeps saying it should sort of rhyme with Disneyland. Seem like our US brains can’t get it our brains,

    • Yes, they are going to start the ToC on Friday. The matchups and dates of the quarterfinals were released this afternoon, and are on the show’s website.

Mira did not give the correct pronunciation for Newfoundland, and that sounded quite clear to me; I thought it was a much closer call on “Saskatchewan,” but there, I heard the last syllable as “wahn,” when I believe it’s correctly pronounced like “one.”

On Newfoundland, I’m inclined to cut Mira slack as, contra Ken, it’s not expected of a contestant to review pronunciations before taping. Andy: given that you seem to disagree, is it your position that the show should have required Mira to do a “pick-up” on that response?

      • Bill Vollmer | February 16, 2024 at 9:39 pm |

To start the biggest event on the Jeopardy calender on a Friday seems idiotic to me, though what to do with the day between the end of the last Wild Card Championship and the start of the T of C is beyond me. Another “practice game” would work, but no one is getting byes from the quarterfinals this year, right? An exhibition? Who would play, for what?
        You have an answer?

        • This is probably a long-shot reason, but could have played a part along with the “what to do for one game between?” That is that Monday is a holiday. It is not a big holiday and there are no celebrations or family get-togethers involved, but it is a day off work for many people, so if the weather is good they might be more apt to be out-and-about than on just any Monday in February. Therefore, starting on Friday (which would be likely to have average weekday viewership) the show gets to remind them that ToC will be starting on Monday.

          • OK, I didn’t say that right, I didn’t mean “ToC starting on Monday”, I meant AFTER ToC starting on Friday regular viewers might be more inclined to want to KEEP watching ToC on Monday, but if ToC started on a holiday Monday (even after a reminder on Friday’s show) they might be less apt to remember on Monday that it is not just a regular episode (or more Wild Card) to maybe just miss.

        • I think the answer is best stated, actually, by a quote from Andy that I recall from some months ago — and having dug deep on Reddit, I found it:

“I think the show has taken the stance of ‘day of the week doesn’t matter ratings-wise, so it’s not going to be a consideration for our competition or tournament scheduling'”

Keep in mind: Jeopardy! had never carried a two-day total-point affair over a weekend before (that is, aired it Friday and Monday). Earlier this season, because of how their planning fell on the calendar, they did it not once, not twice… but five times.

It harkens back to something I stated a few months back: if you get into thinking something can’t happen because “Jeopardy! has never…” or “Michael Davies wouldn’t possibly…”, you’re in the wrong head space. For non-Celebrity games, the only sacred thing is the three-round, 30-minute, 61-clue format. Everything else is on the table, as is shown by the “postseason” concept, even in a season unaffected by industrial action.

    • the current J! production staff seemingly no longer cares about fitting tournaments neatly into weeks. But yes, the J! website has already posted the ToC quarterfinal schedule and matchups (with a placeholder for the TBD winner of the currently airing champions wildcard) and it will begin on Fri 2/23

    • Hawaii might be an example as I believe that the Islanders (if that is a correct term) pronounce it with the accent on the last syllable.

  6. Robert J. Fawkes | February 16, 2024 at 6:57 pm |

Having read the part of Big Daddy in a play reading group that I was in back in the 1980’s, this couldn’t have been easier. Life experiences add up.

Congratulations to Mira. I think she is a favorite of a lot of fans, including myself.

  7. I wasn’t able to come up with this FJ, though I have heard of it, of course. I went 3 for 5 on the week, which is a win for me.

Retro congrats to Mira on her win (I had selected her to win) and I look forward to seeing her in the Final come next Wednesday and Thursday.

I was so stoked to see the TOC Quarterfinal matchups released today. Gets me pumped up for the TOC starting next Friday night. 🙂

    Have a great weekend everyone!
