Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, February 2, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the February 2, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Army Technology) for Friday, February 2, 2024 (Season 40, Game 105):

Bearing the name of a man who died in Iowa in 1838, these began service in 1979 & today number in the thousands

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Michael Menkhus, a data analyst from Kansas City, Missouri (Yesterday’s total: $0)
Michael Menkhus on Jeopardy!
Andy Tirrell, a political science & international relations professor from San Diego, California (Yesterday’s total: $14,800)
Andy Tirrell on Jeopardy!
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada (Yesterday’s total: $20,000)
Juveria Zaheer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Juveria Zaheer dominated the Double Jeopardy Round yesterday to have a big lead, but a Final Jeopardy where only Andy Tirrell was correct brought Juveria back to the field and put Andy in second place! Michael Menkhus, in third after getting Final Jeopardy incorrect and betting everything, has his work cut out for him at this point. However, he has had a very strong time on the buzzer this event, so a comeback isn’t out of the question! One thing to keep in mind that because yesterday’s scores are locked in and can’t be bet today (while today’s can), Juveria has an “effective lead” of $2,600 over Andy and $10,000 over Michael. If either of those players aren’t that far ahead of Juveria going into Final Jeopardy, Juveria will have the advantage going into Final.

Then, at 8 PM Eastern on TuneIn’s Jeopardy Radio channel, the second Champions Wildcard group kicks off with Play-In Game #3. Make sure to tune in for that!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Introduced in 1979 to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the US Army’s transport helicopter, the Sikorsky  UH-60 Black Hawk has featured prominently in US military operations since. The helicopter also gives its name to the 2001 Ridley Scott film Black Hawk Down, about the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu in which the helicopters featured prominently.

As with all US army helicopters, given Native American names, this was named after the famed Sauk leader who fought unsuccessfully to keep American settlers away from Sauk territory.

The helicopter also featured prominently in the 2011 operation to kill Osama Bin Laden; for that operation, a quieter version of the helicopter that was able to evade Pakistani detection was commissioned.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Just Playing; A Long Session Of Monopoly; Etch & Sketch; A Successful Operation; The Game Of Life; Building In Lagos)

By finding the Daily Double on Clue #2, Juveria took the Daily Double out of the hands of her opponents; she rebounded well from an incorrect response on that Daily Double to lead after 15 clues. Another six correct in the second half of the opening round extended Juveria’s lead.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Juveria 6 correct 1 incorrect
Andy 4 correct 2 incorrect
Michael 2 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Michael would like to thank the Missouri Quiz Bowl Alliance.
Andy wants to thank his wife Sarah, who let him compete while she’s in Rome.
Juveria would like to shout out her 10-year-old daughter.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Juveria 12 correct 1 incorrect
Michael 8 correct 2 incorrect
Andy 7 correct 2 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Juveria $6,200
Michael $2,800
Andy $2,000

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Talking About Tolkien; We’ve Got History; Billboard‘s 500 Best Pop Songs; Weights & Measures; Exploring U.S. Cities; Delicious Before & After)

While Andy and Michael got to the Daily Doubles, a number of high-value incorrect responses (and 4 Triple Stumpers at the $2000 level) kept the scores low enough such that Andy and Michael weren’t able to get as much from the Daily Doubles as they needed to. Eight correct responses from Juveria led to her having an overall runaway going into Final Jeopardy (even though Michael holds the lead in today’s game)

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Michael 18 correct 4 incorrect
Juveria 20 correct 2 incorrect
Andy 14 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Michael $13,200
Juveria $11,800
Andy $4,400

Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper—that means Juveria is headed to the Tournament of Champions, Andy takes second, and Michael third!

Tonight’s results:

Andy $4,400 – $4,400 = $0 + $14,800 = $14,800 ($50,000) (What are Hummers?)
Juveria $11,800 – $0 = $11,800 + $20,000 = $31,800 ($100,000) (What are ?)
Michael $13,200 – $10,401 = $2,799 + $0 = $2,799 ($25,000) (What are Sherman Abrams tanks?)

Juveria Zaheer, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the February 2, 2024 game.)

16 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, February 2, 2024"

  1. I had no idea, so, rather than draw a blank, I guessed “What is a Hummer?” I don’t even know when those came into use, or who they’re named after, but I knew it wasn’t the right answer anyway. My knowledge of military technology could fit in the head of a “pigeon”—the last answer I got right on this topic.

  2. Thinking of names on things in the army, I did think of Sikorsky which I knew couldn’t be right if for no other reason than he lived in the 20th century, but I had no chance getting Black Hawk.

  3. Had no clue at first bet then focused in again on the two given years, and it came to me!

  4. Juveria strikes me as a sneaky good Jeopardy player. Like really, really good. She is kinda quiet. Unasssuming. But she knows a lot of stuff about a lot of different things. And plays the game extremely well. She pretty much dominated the final against 2 very good contestants. Fun part of a tournament like this is the competition makes for some very good (and fun) matches.

    • Jay Williams | February 2, 2024 at 1:38 pm |

I would not be surprised if Juveria is still standing at the end of the Tournament of Champions.

  5. Juveria is a pretty good player and she has strong knowledge. Though the battle of Mogadishu helped me to get the Blackhawk helicopter here. But I hope she and Ray will have z good rematch in the toc

    • Am I missing something?..How did Mogadishu get you to the correct response? No mention of Mogadishu (or Somalia) in the query.

      • Louis’ comments frequently sound like Andy’s explanation (or maybe Ken’s) provides him his “clues” rather than the actual FJ/clue providing the only information. But perhaps when Louis says “helped me get” (and similar phrases in the past) he just means “made me finally recognize having known this in the past” [rather than “ah, interesting, did not know that”] instead of meaning “was the key item within the ACTUAL Final Jeopardy clue” (when it WASN’T in there).

  6. I drew a blank on this one. It happens.

But I’m really happy for Juveria! She should honestly be grouped with the superchampions here – she’s produced several runaway wins against stiff competition, with only one close call. She is scary good and I’m expecting her to at least win her quarterfinal in the TOC. But since these aren’t played on paper, anything can happen. Such is Jeopardy life.

You;d think a Chicagoan would be more familar with Chief Black hawk given the NHL’s team’s use of that name, (though they usually spell it as one word,) and, the continuing controversy over that. But no, this final went over my head, like a Black Hawk helicopter.
I agree with every who commented on Juveria. She is a strong player, it will be interesting to she how she does in the T of C.

  8. I was telling my wife yesterday that Jeopardy once had a question asking for one of two sports teams named after real people (Browns and Blackhawks). And I still missed today’s Finsl.

  9. I got it wrong, too, but came closer than the three players. I guessed Huey helicopters. It turns out that they [Bell helicopters] go way back (into the 50s), but the model that gave it the nickname Huey came out in 1962 — still pretty well before 1979, but at least adjacent decades 😉 (though I am guessing perhaps their name wasn’t widely known to non-military people for a few years).

Sir, I thank you very much for your comprehensive summary of tonight’s game. I was unfortunately ensnarled in traffic in El Paso and missed the broadcast. I had been closely following as I had the chance, and your analysis really gave an extra insight, plus the result. Again, mil gracias!

  11. All I could think of saying for FJ is Drone. Knew that couldn’t be right, but better than no answer.

Retro congrats to Juveria! Such strong play in Second Chance and the Champions Wildcard. Heck of a run to get to the ToC. The competition only gets tougher, but I think she has the mettle for it.

Can’t wait for 2024 Champions Wildcard Season 39 Group 2 starting on Monday.

3 weeks from today starts the ToC. Can’t wait to see the format for a 27 player ToC. 21 players was pretty clear cut on a format. 27 players, not so much.

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂
