Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Military History) for Tuesday, February 27, 2024 (Season 40, Game 122):
A prototype of this craft was deployed in August 1955; it made headlines in May 1960
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Yungsheng Wang, a deputy public defender originally from Lafayette, Louisiana![]() |
David Sibley, an Episcopal priest from Walla Walla, Washington![]() |
Hannah Wilson, a puzzle designer from Chicago, Illinois![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Especially on the back of yesterday’s major upset of Cris Pannullo, which proves that anything can happen these days at this level of Jeopardy!, quarterfinal #3 is shaping up to be an excellent battle. Firstly, we see the return of Hannah Wilson to the stage after she won 8 times last season. Her two opponents are David Sibley and Yungsheng Wang. Yungsheng advanced through Champions Wildcard this past fall and is very strong, while David has been doing significant preparations to improve his own skills since his regular run finished. I am expecting a fiercely-contested three-way battle in today’s episode.

Correct response: What is the (Lockheed) U-2?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The Lockheed U-2 was a famous American Cold War spy plane, generally used for reconnaissance missions. It was built because the Americans believed that Soviet technology (which has been given to the Soviets by the Americans during World War II) could not track aircraft that flew above 65,000 feet. Thus the Americans commissioned the U-2, which could fly at 70,000 feet—beyond the reach of Soviet radar.
Unfortunately, these beliefs were rendered incorrect when Francis Gary Powers began an overflight of the Soviet Union in May 1960—the Americans erred in scheduling the flight on May Day, a major Soviet holiday with significantly less air traffic than usual. The plane was shot down by the USSR and Powers captured.
In a Tournament of Champions situation, this should be a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- With regard to the $1200 short story clue: The clue said “this…amphibian”, and did not ask for the title. Thus, the full title was not required.
- Judging by just how strong David was on the buzzer overall in this game, even though the result didn’t work out, I have no problem with what Hannah did on the last Daily Double. It was a move to pretty much try to put the game away, and it did not work.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

“Military history” is not my wheelhouse. I guessed “What is a hovercraft?” (I’m not even really sure when those were invented.)
An easy FJ clue for anyone who read the newspapers in 1960.
I remember all three of today’s contestants and am looking forward to today’s match.
I was only 4 years old in 1960 so obviously I don’t remember this. My guess was the stealth bomber.
Rachel Maddow had an opening monologue last week on her weekly show reminding people about the importance of capturing military technology in spycraft and warfare. U2 was discussed prominently in that.
Even if I hadn’t seen Bridge of Spies, I hope I would’ve still gotten this. Wasn’t born then, but read about it. For the record, the SR-71 Blackbird is my favorite plane.
Yes ‘Bridge of Spies’ was one of the “it has also come up many times over the years” I commented below. But mostly many anniversaries of the incident and news coverage (and maybe subsequent anniversaries) of Power’s death in a helicopter crash less than 20 years after being shot down in Russia.
The SR-71 Blackbird is an awesome plane and I have seen it many times in full display in Palmdale, California.
This one satisfies my “We Didn’t Start The Fire” theory of Jeopardy, that something mentioned in the song will always come up.
Have you heard Fall Out Boys version? All things which happened since Billy Joel’s version came out in 1989.
I was today years old when I learned that U-2 in “We Didn’t Start The Fire” wasn’t referring to the band 🤦🏻♀️
🙂
PS. Did anyone catch question 5 in thrice today?
It just dawned on me. Nice coincidence, that!
Is there a way to play (or at least see) past games rather than just the current day one?
It’s on the to-do list!
Your comment made me try playing for the first time and it was kind of annoying to think of the right answer the 2nd try on three questions, but each time 2nd-guess myself and put something close but not exact and have to only get it right the third try.
Got it. “Craft” could have been a boat. But an aircraft seemed more likely, and the U-2 immediately came to mind. Francis Gary Powers was a notable figure in Cold War history.
Huh, the prediction model now gives +460 odds to Jared and +670 odds to Emily now, while the rest of the odds remain relatively the same. Did Hannah’s loss heavily impact the prediction model for the top seeds?
I mean, for the top semifinalists so far, not the actual top seeds.
I do not claim to be all knowing in anyway. Yet I feel I should’ve known this Final. Since I’m expressing fustration at myself, obviously I didn’t. I was only 7, or, 8 when Powers was shot down. But like today’s players, and, many posters here, the incident must have made an impression on me somehow. Too bad that impression didn’t come forward during the 30 seconds given on stage players to come up with an response/
Having lived through the incident and being old enough to remember, this was fairly easy for me. One reason this was memorable for me is that I’ve always thought Gary Powers was a great name for a pilot. Also had friends that worked at Lockheed so the Lockeed U-2 was my response.
I THINK I was old enough to hear about it at the time and to understand it well enough to remember from then (whereas one is more likely to forget words merely heard) AND my father being a pilot probably added to the impact even though he was no longer in the military. Of course it has also come up many times over the years, so I immediately said “the U2 spyplane”. My only hesitation was wondering if they would consider “spyplane” to be not exactly accurate or lack of a brand name to be not accurate enough or if “U2” is maybe actually a colloquial shortening of a more complicated model name and just “U2” wouldn’t be accepted.
The given correct response plus the accepted contestant responses lets me know my response would have been accepted UNLESS they thought my not using a hyphen made mine wrong (and I kind of doubt that they would have objected to that).
Sorry to see Hannah bow out so early, especially after Chris went out last night. Was really hoping she’d make a deep run.
For me, this was a pretty easy one. The date gave me the U-2 Incident without much hesitation. This is one of those times when my history minor really came through for me, I think.
Any bet of $4,399 or less on the 3rd DD would have kept Hannah in the lead going into Final.
With all due respect here, hindsight is 20-20.
I still don’t have a problem with what Hannah did. She had seen how strong David was—heck, it was no secret, my pre-taping preview said that David was very likely going to improve significantly—and she was trying to take advantage of the situation in front of her.
That’s true. I wonder now if all the superchamps are taken down in the quarters
One can hope not!
Only if the rest of the game progressed in exactly the same way. But this game, like life, is not a series of independent events.
I don’t think it was a bad wager for how many clues remained.
