Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Flags) for Monday, February 5, 2024 (Season 40, Game 106):
The flag of this Asian nation features part of a World Heritage Site built in the 12th century
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Jesse Chin, an accounting director from Bayside, New York
Mira Hayward, a podcast host from Portland, Oregon
Kate Campolieta, a corporate communications specialist from Simsbury, Connecticut
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today’s opening quarterfinal is between Kate Campolieta, Mira Hayward, and Jesse Chin. As I said in my preview yesterday, both myself and the prediction model think that Mira is favored to win this one, but Jesse could easily perform much better than his initial games if he struggles less on the buzzer this time out. Don’t count out Kate, either—everyone in this event is a Jeopardy! champion and is very capable of a victory.

The flag of Cambodia (pictured above) contains two blue stripes, a red stripe in the center, and a three-towered temple in the middle, with the temple representing the country’s famed Angkor Wat. Interestingly, despite its various changes in leadership over the past few decades, some representation of the temple has always featured on the country’s flag.
The temple complex at Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a state temple and mausoleum The Angkor area, which had served as a capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 15th Century, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I know it’s technically up to the player to realize the situation (and kudos to Jesse for doing so), but I still wish Ken would remind players that they can bet up to $2,000 on a Daily Double in Double Jeopardy if their score is not that high.
- If you are going to report on the fact that this is believed to be the first game in the show’s history where all three players bet $0 in Final Jeopardy, I respectfully request that a citation is provided to me. I do not do this research only for it to be repeated without credit.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

Mira: Bet no more than $399 and enjoy your victory! (Actual bet: $0)
Jesse: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $0)

I had no idea what the Cambodian Flag looked like, but world heritage site built in 12th century led me to a guess of Angkor Wat which I knew was in Cambodia.
I followed the same line of reasoning as MarkO, so “What is Cambodia?”
Same here (especially concerning never having seen that flag) except I had no idea of the age of Angkor Wat (except VERY old), was only fairly confident I was right about it being in Cambodia, and realized that Angkor Wat and the Taj Mahal are NOT the only World Heritage sites in Asia, just the only ones I can ever think of [OK, and the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City].
But as old as Angkor Wat is, it is hard to imagine that it is about a century newer than Windsor Castle!
The ankgor wat on that flag helped me to point out it was Cambodia because I remember playing Carmen Sandiego world game on my computer and that country was one of the stops.
I remember watching Carmen Sandiego every day after school. If they brought it back tomorrow to TV, I would still watch.
I accidentally read the answer before the clue here. Would have gotten it, though. Cambodia is one of very few, if not the only, countries to have their national landmark prominently displayed on their flag. Limiting it to Asia makes it easier to retrieve.
Also, when I saw Mira was on this first game on the official site, I was thrilled. I made it no secret a year ago that I adored her run – she’s just this bubbly, warm, personality that makes her rootable, and that continued today. Happy for her – meanwhile, I’m looking forward to giving her podcast a spin.
Jesse in FJ was classy, too. And what a fascinating ending! Though, really, nobody had any reason to make a bet. Positions were locked barring an error a returning player shouldn’t make.
I’m totally with you on you comments about Mira. One very classy Champion. The one thing that was amazing when she first won on 02/09/23 & 02/10/23, she was the first multi-game winner for a lady in Season 39 and the season started back on 09/12/22.
Upon reading Asian nation, World Heritage Site and 12th Century, my internal voice immediately said, “What is Angkor Wat?” Then, I realized, “h I need a nation,” “What is Cambodia?” Did anyone else have that happen?
Not really, as one needed to identify/guess the “site” in order to then identify the country whose flag it would be on (unless one just happened to have familiarity with the flag). World Heritage sites don’t have to be buildings, but it would be kind of difficult to put a nature place or a whole town or village on a flag, so right off I was thinking “edifice”.
My thinking was along the lines of “Well, there is the Taj Mahal in India and there is Angkor Wat in Cambodia” which did not take long enough to forget the clue was what country had its site on its flag.
It sounds to me like you switched from thinking “What site?” to “What country’s flag?” too quickly to think of that as being a near miss rather than just a thought process. However, my having to think if I was sure that Angkor Wat is in Cambodia probably helped keep me on track for “What country?”
I presumed the world heritage site referenced to in this Final Jeopardy was a temple/
From the article on flags in my childhood World Book encyclopedia, I thought I remembered that Cambodia was the only asian nation with such a representation on it’s flag. So I went with “What us Cambodia?” Of course, I was right. Nice to start the week off with a correct repsonse. Streak probably won’t last.
I don’t if this was the first occurence, or, whatever number it is, if all three players wagered nothing in Final. Doesn’t matter. Kate couldn’t catch Jesse unless she pulled a “Cliff,” and, Jesse couldn’t catch Kate unless she did something simiarly foolish, so why bet? Though I’m gald Jesse congratulated Mira, I still wish he had tried to come up with the correct response.
Mira Hayward mentioned that a book on Oliver Cromwell is her favorite book. I’m trying to find the name of that book.
Matt Carberry posted on Twitter about it—the book was “Wolf Hall” by Hilary Mantel.
“Wolf Hall” made into award winning PBS Masterpiece miniseries starring Marc Rylance. Truly wonderful.
The book is about Thomas, not Oliver. (As noted in the clue.)
Yes the Hilary Mantel book trilogy is about Thomas Cromwell. Wolf Hall film miniseries covered the first two books. A miniseries is now in production based on the final book.
What was the answer associated with yawning
Oscitant is an adjective that means doing this–& don’t start, because I will too
Thank you Andy. Where can I find this definition? The only definition
I have found is associated with the act of yawning, boredom or laziness.
I don’t understand what you mean here. Merriam-Webster says “oscitant” = “yawning”, and that’s what the clue asked. It’s not that hard.
Finally, my wish has been granted!
In his DJ DD, Jesse has said “‘t’s a lion seal?” Is that not enough to serve as a form of a question?
Triple zero wagers perhaps more likely in Fleming era where players got to keep the money win or lose
I didn’t know the FJ. Went with China.
Retro congrats to Mira! On to one of the 3 Semifinal games. Mira is one of my favorite contestants and I hope that she makes the 2 day Final.
I know it is associated with yawning but there doesn’t appear to be any reference to its a affecting another’s feeling the need to do likewise. Just my interpretation!
With all due respect, that’s just a thing that happens with yawning.
