Andy’s Weekly Thoughts (3/2): Don’t Worry, Be Happy

I’d like to lead off by apologizing for the tardiness of this editorial column; I am going through some things in my personal life that delayed the publication of this column. It’s also going to be a shorter column.

Something To Keep In Mind When The JIT Field Is Announced

I can guarantee you that there are going to be some disappointed fans when the field for the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament is released before the event. That’s a given. People have their favorite players and they will be disappointed if their favorite didn’t make it.

I would like to remind many of these fans, though, that in a number of cases, it might not be that your favorite player wasn’t invited, but it might be that your favorite player chose to decline the invitation. Maybe there are issues that you’re not aware of that would cause a player or two to have to decline an invite. I’ve even been guilty of that myself, and have had contestants email me after the fact explaining that an invitation was afforded but declined.

Please keep that in mind before complaining online in the coming days and weeks if you feel that your favorite player was snubbed. It might be just as likely that your favorite player was invited but just not able to attend.

No, Jeopardy! Fans Aren’t Mad About The Neopronouns Clue

One thing that I noticed this week was that the majority of the complaints about the neopronouns clue on Monday’s show weren’t coming in until Tuesday, Wednesday, or later. If there’s anything that I’ve learned in my years covering the show, it’s that the people who are actually viewing the show are the ones commenting that night.

The fact that the complaints didn’t really roll in en masse until after the clue got featured as a right-wing talking point tells me that the threatened boycott will have absolutely no effect on the show whatsoever—as the people claiming to boycott the show aren’t watching in the first place. Moreover, any news outlet claiming that “Jeopardy! fans are upset” is 100% lying. Neither fans nor viewers are upset here—the only people who are upset are those who elected to send abuse at the show after their cult leaders told them to. That’s all.

(Though I have to say, I did get a chuckle at the news articles later in the week highlighting the significant increase in the follower counts on Instagram of the show.)

A Quick Note On Celebrations

If you just won a game of Jeopardy!, you’re allowed to be happy and act happy. End of story.

Is the Jeopardy Invitational a new name for the Jeopardy Masters?

    • No, the Jeopardy Invitational Tournament is a new event, being run to give players from the past an opportunity to prove that they belong in Season 2 of Masters.

in other words, a sort of Second Chance competition for the Jeopardy Masters.
