Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, March 19, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the March 19, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Human Body) for Tuesday, March 19, 2024 (Season 40, Game 137):

This glandular organ that starts to shrink at puberty is known for being where the cells key to adaptive immunity develop

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin (2 wins)
Ben Chan on Jeopardy!
Troy Meyer, a music executive from Tampa, Florida (1 win)
Troy Meyer on Jeopardy!
Yogesh Raut, a social and personality psychologist from Vancouver, Washington (2 wins)
Yogesh Raut on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After easily the most dominant game of anyone start-to-finish on the buzzer, Yogesh Raut has now brought himself to within a game of $250,000. Will he win a second straight game to close out this series? Or, will Ben Chan claim his third victory tonight? Finally, there’s no way Troy Meyer will go down without a fight—a win from Troy will send this first-to-three-win series to a winner-take-all Game 7.

Correct response: What is the thymus?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The thymus, located in the upper front part of the chest, is a major part of the human immune system; T cells (named after the thymus) are crucial to the body’s adaptive immunity response. After reaching its largest size just before puberty, it shrinks from that point forward, though some T cell development continues throughout adulthood.

I’m not entirely sure how to predict this Final Jeopardy clue; this is not a strong subject of mine personally, so I can’t really say that I’m a good judge of clue difficulty here. To me, this could land anywhere from “this is actually hard, it’ll go 0-for-3” to “this is just a big blind spot in my knowledge, all 3 players will get this instantly”.

19 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, March 19, 2024"

  1. Barely got it in the 30 seconds, but that still counts!

My only goals for this ToC were to have at least one $20K Coryat and to end it with a Final Jeopardy solve rate above 10%. I accomplished both of those things 😀

  2. I knew “What is the thymus?” as soon as I read the clue. “The Human Body” is one of my strong suits.

  3. I am really pulling for Troy in this game. First, I think seeing a game 7 tomorrow in a winner-take-all game with 3 players of this caliber would be a lot of fun to watch (I think a lot of people were hoping the Ken/James/Brad match would be that way). Second, I have been pulling for Troy knowing he was a local kid. Went to same schools as my kids. One of my kids had the same teacher Troy called out as being inspirational to him.

Is it all right to say I’m extremely nervous about this match (and the potential seventh game)? At this point, all three of these guys are strong with huge nerves of steel.

  5. aaronthecrystalclod | March 19, 2024 at 12:40 pm |

Well… social media is going to be set ablaze with this. I’m too afraid now to even check to see what they’re thinking of Yogesh after his win here.

  6. Yogesh got the bet right this time to gain his own come from behind victory. Congrats to him on winning the Tournament of Champions! And thanks to Ben and Troy for making this such a competitive match.

Some interesting stats from the six-game Finals:

Yogesh: average Coryat $18,200, 3/3 on DDs, 3/6 on FJ
Troy: average Coryat $18,200, 9/11 on DDs, 3/6 on FJ
Ben: average Coryat $11,100, 3/4 on DDs, 6/6 on FJ

Although Troy only won one game, he was close to equal to Yogesh from a statistical standpoint. And although Ben lagged on Coryat, he compensated with excellence in FJ.

    • Troy had the lead going into Final Jeopardy in 3 of the 6 games. But he was 1-3 on those Final Jeopardy questions. and the one he got right was a runaway game so it didn’t matter.

Ben was incredible in going 6 for 6 in Final Jeopardy. Having a little extra time to think about the answer with speed not being an issue really helped him. Knowing FJ is a huge plus in non-runaway games.

Without the first game FJ betting blunder, Yogesh would have won in 5 games. He probably would have been kicking himself for the rest of his life had he not won the tournament.

Very entertaining tournament. All 3 players were very good.

    • Robert J. Fawkes | March 19, 2024 at 7:06 pm |

As well as Yogesh played throughout the tournament, it is surprising to me that he only won three games in regular play. Is that correct or am I remembering incorrectly? What happened in his fourth appearance that he didn’t go on an extended run? On the other hand, Chris won something like 19 games but dropped out right away in the ToC. I feel bad for Chris that he may be forgotten even though he did so well initially.

      • Yes, Yogesh just had three wins in his initial run, losing on January 16, 2023 in a close game to 1-day champion Katie Palumbo. Interestingly, Troy began his run on January 19, 2023. Thus, if Yogesh had won just three more times, Troy would have faced him in his first appearance on the show!

      • Basically, he got crushed on the buzzer that game. He was 35% successful despite having twelve more attempts than his closest opponent, which is frankly astounding. He’s made amazing strides in that aspect of his game.

Despite that, he was only slightly behind going into FJ. It turned out to be a triple stumper, but the leader bet small, so he lost.

  7. Bill Vollmer | March 19, 2024 at 5:46 pm |

aaronthecrystalcloud already touched on what those who ciriticized Yogesh will be saying with his win, so I won’t.
My high school Physiology class was so long ago, personal computers were science fiction, so my knowledge of the human body is not something I would call something I’m particulary strong in, either.
Like Troy, I said “what is the pituitary gland?” Maybe I’ll do better with MegaMillions tonight.

    • I would call most of my knowledge of the human body as familiarity (such that in reading medical-related articles I can understand them, but I don’t always have precise recall). For example, I guessed the hypothalamus — kind of easy to mix up with the thymus, right?

  8. Robert J. Fawkes | March 19, 2024 at 6:59 pm |

When I saw the category, I thought it would be a triple get because everybody has one and these guys would probably be pretty familiar with theirs. Then, when I saw the clue, I was sure this would be a triple get and whoever led after DJ would be the winner. Wow, was I wrong about that. Turns out, only 1 of 3 got final right and it wsa better to be in second place than first place. Sad for Troy, congrats to Yogesh.

Why is everyone worried about social media? Serious question as I don’t know what that’s all about as I don’t really use social media to any great extent. Maybe, I’m bettr off not knowing.

  9. To quote Andy from yesterday “In another case of the writers are prescient again”, a notable (though not “key”) thing in the main plot line of the ‘CSI: Vegas’ episode just two nights ago was the thymus (and its location in the human body), but unfortunately they did not mention its function!

  10. Who is competing in the first quarterfinal tomorrow?

  11. Congrats to Yogesh. Thoroughly deserved. I can’t wait to see the James v. Yogesh gameplay and interactions.

  12. Well…..missed FJ again. 16 day losing streak! LOL Maybe tomorrow?

Retro congrats to Yogesh on taking down the ToC! That was such a great competition, that I am kind of sad that we don’t get to see these 3 compete against each other anymore. I look forward to seeing you in the Jeopardy Masters in May.

The JIT will be fun starting tomorrow night, as I am very much looking forward to seeing people play that I have never seen play.
