Warning: This page contains spoilers for the March 25, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Notorious Figures) for Monday, March 25, 2024 (Season 40, Game 141):

Never even a soldier, this man lied that his nickname came from a shrapnel wound while fighting in the Argonne

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California
Amy Schneider on Jeopardy!
Austin Rogers, a bar owner & author from New York, New York
Austin Rogers on Jeopardy!
Celeste DiNucci, an arts strategist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Celeste DiNucci on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament continues today with Amy Schneider taking on Austin Rogers and Celeste DiNucci. I do think that Austin’s game matches up well against Amy’s—but Austin will need to get to the Daily Doubles first in order to take full advantage. Amy Schneider, of course, is trying to get back to Jeopardy! Masters after being relegated from Season 1; she finished 5th last season.

According to an August 12, 1996 article in the New York Daily News, Al Capone’s famed scar (the one that gave him the nickname “Scarface”) was given to him at the age of 17 by Frank Galluccio; Capone was working security at a place called the Harvard Inn when he was knifed by “Little Frankie”. Later, according to the same article, Capone would claim he was scarred by shrapnel while fighting with the Lost Battalion in 1918.

This is one of those clues that makes you go “Oh, of course!” as soon as you realize what the correct response is. All three of these players are strong enough in order to get there.

  1. I said Scarface and I am assuming that would not be accepted because it did not ask for the nickname. I am currently reading a book about mobsters but could not come up with Capone in 30 seconds, only the nickname.

    • Me, too. Oddly, I did not know that was Capone’s nickname.

      • I did not even come up with Scarface, but I, too, did not remember that he was Al Capone. Honestly, I really don’t think I ever knew they were the same person.

  2. Since I was in the studio audience for this game (as well as Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s) I can safely say that this is the only time I’ve ever missed a Final Jeopardy clue twice. 🙂

  3. Got there, barely within the 30 seconds. The category name definitely helped narrow it down. I don’t know if anyone else feels the same way, but the game play and board difficulty of the JIT seem on par with the TOC. I’ve been struggling with these boards, in a good way!

  4. Another favorite cruises!

  5. Sorta surprised no one got it! They don’t come much more Notorious than ol’ Al! Oh well, Amy for the win, and I’d bet the entry price of a billion-dollar lottery ticket that she will win it all.

  6. I am enjoying Thrice. The teacher site I am on has subgroup of puzzle solvers where we post our daily scores. Thanks for sharing!

As it happens, I just watched the movie “Good Fellas” this weekend. During the presentation, there was a trailer for the movie “Scarface.” Even though the movie was about a character named Tony Montana, I knew the original “Scarface” was Al Capone. I’ve pretty much known Al Capone as “Scarface” since childhood so this one was pretty easy. I’m actually a little bit surprised that none of the contestants got it but that might be because they are from a younger generation. I kind of think people from my generation probably had a better chance of getting this one correct.

    • My first/immediate thought was the same as Amy’s due to Col. Parker’s persona based on lies, but I kept trying to think of someone else because I understood from the clue that the person’s name or nickname would have an injury in it — like One-Eyed Jack or some such — rather than (or in addition to) a military moniker.

  8. Blind guessed Al Capone. After the clue I changed it to Colonel Parker, even though the years didn’t quite line up. Was just at Graceland so the Colonel was on my mind! LOL

  9. 0 for my last 20 on FJ. When will the misery end!?!? LOL I went with Bugsy Siegel tonight. Kind of close.

Retro congrats to Amy on a dominating win! Looking forward to seeing you in 1 of the 3 Semifinals next Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

  10. I guessed George Santos 🙂

With the Final Jeopardy category of “Notorious Figures,” and, with an “answer” referribg to a scar, I immediately thought of Al Capone, not knowing the lie, or, the actual way he got his scar. So, for the first time in a few days, I actual got a Final Jeopardy.

    • You were even more lucky because the clue did not specifically say “scar”. A “shrapnel wound” could be a missing eye or limb (or hand) or just the cause of a bad limp. [Of course those would also have scars, but even if a visible scar, the deformity would be more apt to be the cause of the nickname.]

  12. I had to chime in on this, first-time contributor. I knew Scarface was Capone’s nickname and his timeline and WW I matched. However, my son arrived at the same correct response from another direction. He remembered all the hoods in Peaky Blinders had fought at the Argonne and Somme, and that Tommy Shelby (the star) remarked that Capone had lied about fighting there. No mention of a scar. Nothing like knowing something that Amy didn’t.
