I’m going to open my write-up today and say that this is going to be a much easier Final Jeopardy clue for those who hear Ken Jennings say “Michel” and not “Michael”, as someone reading this is much more likely to subconsciously assume a typo and insert an A for “Michael”—making this clue much harder for them.

Seeing a clearly French name like “Michel”, though, with the addition of a science fiction premise such as a golden meteor—in this case, The Chase of the Golden Meteor—should hopefully point contestants and viewers alike to the early master of science fiction, Jules Verne.

  1. Yes, the French name “Michel” and the science fiction premise led me straight to “Who is Jules Verne?”

  2. I thought this was pretty straightforward since it was science-fiction and the son’s name, as was pointed out, was French. I was unfamiliar with the work, however. Nice to end the week with a correct response.

  3. Got it. Although I knew nothing about the son, Jules Verne seemed the most likely response.

    • Ditto. Though I didn’t KNOW it was Jules Verne, I still felt quite confident that would be correct.

  4. Shame on me for assuming a typo.

    • I assumed that the spelling was correct, but did not know that was the French spelling or pronunciation. I’ve just seen and heard several versions of Michael (and Rachael/Rachel) before.

  5. Sure enough, I scanned it as “Michael” and thought of H. G. Wells.

As easy as it wss, just think how much easier it would have been if the clue had shown his fuller name, Michel Jean Pierre. Then, there would have been no mistaking it as a French name. 😊

I don’t think the picture of the raptor was a Cooper’s hawk. I think it was a peregrine falcon.

    • Stock photo provider Alamy labels it as a Cooper’s Hawk. https://www.alamy.com/video/medium-shot-of-coopers-hawk-421124024.html?videoid=6526EAB7-6FC9-493C-BF2A-F3DEF001427C&p=1692463&pn=1&searchId=8eb5c022eb06876f51b1e1d83ac8d51d&searchtype=13

(Admin note: I am simply explaining how such a mistake happened. There are certainly enough amateur ornithologists online tonight claiming a mistake.)

      • Enos Williams | April 12, 2024 at 10:16 pm |

        Are any of them Trinidadian?

        • My Dad’s side of the family has folks from Grenada, St. Lucia and Barbados.

Also, we used to go to NYC all the time. Most of our relatives lived there and it’s only about 30 miles away.

I live in metro Atlanta now and I am quite fond of it, but the name of Spring Valley is very seldom heard.

          • Thank you so much for stopping in!

(That being said: I think Enos was making a reference to Lechmere Guppy, a British-born “Trinidadian amateur ichthyologist” who inspired that Final Jeopardy category on April 1, 1997, the April Fools episode hosted by Pat Sajak).

It’s understandable confusion. There are a number of hawks that resemble peregrine falcons. We had what we thought, at first, was a peregrine falcon that would regularly visit my parents’ backyard when I was a young adult just out of college outside of Cleveland. The falcons had returned to downtown only a couple of years earlier, and my degree was from Bowling Green, where the falcon was our mascot and pictures of falcons are everywhere. But we took the time to compare some photos my dad took with bird guides, and came to the conclusion it wasn’t a falcon. From there we vacillated between Cooper’s hawk and red-tailed hawk, before finally settling on the latter.

  8. You could have knocked me over with a feather when ken announced Alison has 3 kids. She has obviously taken well care of herself and smart also. In final jeopardy she looked absolutely stumped. I figured she would write a personal note to family or friends. I hope she has a long run as champion

    • “In final jeopardy she looked absolutely stumped.”

I bet she was trying to decide if she needed to include the first name Jules or perhaps be worse off by maybe misspelling it.

  9. Now 0 for my last 34 on FJ. I’m not even close to a Sci Fi guy, so I had no chance. I have heard the name Jules Verne, but had not a clue why.

On to FJ on Monday! 🙂

What a very impressive win by Alison! Congrats on win #2 and I wish you the best of luck in Game 3 on Monday!

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂
