Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Organizations) for Wednesday, April 17, 2024 (Season 40, Game 158):
The press called the donations received after this org.’s 1938 founding “a silver tide which actually swamped the White House”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Jeff Plate, an attorney from Asbury Park, New Jersey![]() |
Vidya Ravella, a business development executive originally from Skokie, Illinois![]() |
Alison Betts, a writer & creative executive originally from San Jose, California (4-day total: $107,700)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After surviving a Double Stumper Final Jeopardy from second place, Alison Betts will attempt to become the 275th five-time champion in the game’s post-1984 history today! However, Vidya Ravella and Jeff Plate hope they can prevent that from happening.
It should be noted that, similarly to yesterday (and a couple of days last week) KIMT (the CBS affiliate in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa) will be airing Jeopardy! at 9:30 AM Central (10:30 AM Eastern) due to UEFA Champions League coverage this afternoon.

Franklin Roosevelt, who himself had been diagnosed with polio in the 1920s, founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, commonly known then and known today as the March of Dimes (after entertainer Eddie Cantor gave it that nickname, playing on the newsreels known as The March of Time). After Cantor suggested that Americans mail a dime to the White House, the mail room was deluged, as over 2.6 million dimes arrived.
Funds raised by the March of Dimes funded polio vaccines that helped to mostly eradicate the disease, after which the organization changed its mission to prevent birth defects and infant mortality.

- Alison’s total of $121,500 ranks 102nd of the 275 5-time champions.
- Being that Junoesque is capitalized, it is not an acceptable word per the rules of Scrabble.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

I got this thanks to a question on Weakest Link last week – paraphrasing, “it’s appropriate that FDR is on the 10 cent piece since this organization was founded during his presidency”.
Triple get.
I got it, even though I did not know about the White House connection. “Silver tide” was the key.
Alison keeps finding ways to win.
Yeah, I got this before Ken finished reading the clue. All I needed was the math of FDR + silver, and it was so easy to get to FDR from the White House in 1938. But hey, I learned something about dime donations during the Depression, and that being why they put FDR on the dime. Thanks for sharing!
I also got aegis just as quickly and was bummed that Vidya didn’t make a game of it. This game was kind of weird with how low the scores were, but that’s regular play for you. I can’t say I did much better on the whole even though I got those two wagering clues right. Happy for Alison clinching a TOC berth, though.
I’m looking forward to seeing Alison in the next ToC. She has a nice style of play as well as exhibiting a good sense of humor and personality. She’s enjoyable to watch whether it’s a runaway or a come-from-behind game. Congratulations to Alison on her 5th win.
I like how Allison applauds and compliments her fellow contestants.
A tractor trailer is a semi trailer
Regardless of whether it is or not, the clue said the term “semitrailer” was coined in the 19-teens. Because the term “tractor trailer” was coined the late 19th century, “tractor trailer” does not fit all aspects of clue and category, and thus is not a correct response per the rules of the show.
Also note that “tractor” is not a prefix.
I believe I was familiar with each individual part of the clue (as well as the later additional info about FDR then being on the 10-cent piece) but I really didn’t have to think about it as ‘March of Dimes’ came to me immediately. I believe it would have been a “triple get” if all the contestants had been over 60 (NOT implying that Allison is).
Hi, Lisa. Yes, I have to agree with you about those over 60. Being among those in that cohort, this came to me immediately, too. 🙂
Well this Jeff thought that same as Jeff on Jeopardy and went with Salvation Army, though it didn’t seem correct to me. The silver part of the clue had me convinced that I was most likely wrong. Unfortunately I couldn’t get to March of Dimes within the allotted 30 seconds. O for my last 37. Pretty sad, as these clues haven’t been all that hard. 🙁
Nice win by Alison and congratulations on making the next ToC. That’s awesome! 🙂 We’ll be watching tomorrow to see if you get Game #6. Good luck, retroactively.
You don’t really hear much about the March of Dimes much these days, at least I don’t recall seeing it lately. But it is definitely associated with FDR and polio so that’s why I assume they put him on the dime. Quick get for me.
Vidya seemed like fun. If she had gotten that DD she had another $12,000. Maybe she isn’t taking stabs to get above zero so she might have gotten to the lead.
