Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 3, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Physicists) for Wednesday, April 3, 2024 (Season 40, Game 148):

This man with a force named after him published an 1835 scientific treatise on the physics of billiard balls

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sam Kavanaugh, an educator from Minneapolis, Minnesota
Sam Kavanaugh on Jeopardy!
Andrew He, a stay-at-home dad from Concord, California
Andrew He on Jeopardy!
Larissa Kelly, an editor from Richmond, California
Larissa Kelly on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today, we move on to semifinal #2 in the 2024 Jeopardy Invitational Tournament, which features Larissa Kelly, Andrew He, and Sam Kavanaugh. I’m expecting to see fireworks on all three Daily Doubles in this game; I would even go as far as to say that Sam is probably the most underrated player in terms of Daily Double skill in modern Jeopardy—but I think he’d receive much more credit had his run not come a month and a half after James Holzhauer. Andrew He, of course, has made his own name out of big bets on Daily Doubles, and Larissa’s dominance comes from her mastery of the board material in general; I’m guessing Larissa will have the best Coryat score, but that the game will come down to who does best on the Daily Doubles.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Correct response: Who is (Gaspard-Gustave de) Coriolis?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Two of the three works that Coriolis is best known for today were published in 1835: Théorie Mathématique des Effets du Jeu de Billiard (the billiard ball physics treatise mentioned in the clue) and Sur les équations du mouvement relatif des systèmes de corps, a treatise on the transfer of energy in rotating systems. While Coriolis’s treatise had to do with water wheels, it was later realized that this would work on a significantly larger scale: specifically, the Earth. Later, the Coriolis force became often used in meteorology to explain cyclones and the movement of weather patterns.

Unfortunately, the most common reference to the Coriolis effect that most people know is generally false: no, water does not swirl into drains in different directions based on what hemisphere you are located in.

This one definitely came down to the Daily Doubles. While Sam and Larissa played well early in DJ to make it a close game, Andrew found both Daily Doubles on clues 11 and 16—he got both of them correct and added $15,600 to his score. It didn’t matter that Andrew didn’t signal on the final 11 clues; he’d got a runaway cemented with nine clues to play.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Andrew 20 correct 1 incorrect
Larissa 21 correct 1 incorrect
Sam 12 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Larissa $13,200
Sam $9,200

While Sam and Larissa sent congratulations over to Andrew, Andrew got Final correct to put the exclamation point on this victory.

Tonight’s results:

Sam $9,200 – $0 = $9,200 (Who is Andrew He, Physicist)
Larissa $13,200 – $1,000 = $12,200 (Who is congrats Andrew!)
Andrew $32,000 + $0 = $32,000 (Who is Coriolis?) (Finalist)

16 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, April 3, 2024"

  1. Based on “force named after a man” and “the physics of billiard balls” (something rotating), I guessed “Who is Coriolis?” I knew only the name, so, as always, appreciated Andy’s write-up.

  2. Residents of South Florida associate Coriolis with the tendency of hurricanes approaching from the east to eventually spiral north. (At least I hope that’s true and not just another myth.)

  3. Clueless. Only thing I could come up with in 30 seconds was centrifugal which I was pretty sure was not someone’s name.

  4. MarkO that was the first thing that came to my mind to and I rejected it for that same reason!

  5. If Sam wins tomorrow, wouldn’t the final be the 3 contestants from last year’s Masters Tournament who didn’t get auto bids into this years Masters Tournament? Expect there are some benefits to having played recently (all other things being equal)?

  6. Sam Kavanaugh | April 3, 2024 at 1:19 pm |

Massive congrats to my friend, physicist Andrew He! While I obviously want to win any game I play, finishing behind Larissa and Andrew is a pretty good consolation. In my book both of these players are in the top 10 best of all time, and both are people I admire on and off the stage.

Hopefully I comported myself well enough that I get invited back to a future JIT, but if my Jeopardy journey ends here I am happy that it ended in such good company.

      Sam!

I am a recent watcher of Jeopardy!

I have gotten to know you through your recent game play and comments on this site.

      You are a class guy.

    • Great job, Sam!

    • It was a pleasure to watch you play Jeopardy Sam. I wasn’t watching when you were initially on and I’d love to see you come back to play in another JIT! You definitely comported yourself very well!

  7. Jonathan Farley | April 3, 2024 at 1:19 pm |

With Amy and Andrew moving on, it is possible that there will be a rematch in the finals if Sam Buttery wins tomorrow.

    • Robert J. Fawkes | April 3, 2024 at 6:53 pm |

While that is certainly within the realm of possibility, how realistic is it? As good a player as Sam B. is as well as being a nice guy and a fan favorite, he is facing some pretty stiff competition. Matt Jackson and Victoria Groce are among the toughest competitors in the JIT. I think the odds are in favor of either Matt or Victoria in tomorrow’s game. There’s always a chance no matter the odds but it is looking kind of unlikely that all three players from the previous Masters Tournament will be in the finals of the JIT. Wouldn’t it be something if that did happen though.

  8. Water in drains would follow the Coriolis force — if one had sufficiently-large drains! There’s noting inherent in a drain-design that defeats the Coriolis force.

  9. The Simpsons lied to me? Unpossible!

  10. Like MarkO above, the only force I could come up with was Centrifugal. I was also pretty sure that wasn’t a name for someone either. 0 for my last 27. I am clearly very bad at this FJ thang! On to tomorrow night!

Retro congrats on the Semifinal win Andrew! I am looking forward to seeing you and Amy (and one other unknown 3rd contestant) meet up starting on Friday in the Final!

Because I have been watching since Sam has been on, I am pulling for him, but I know that he has his work cut out for him against Matt and Victoria . However, this is why we play the games!

Here’s to a classic tomorrow night. 🙂 And perhaps I can finally land a FJ. The last time I got it right was when Cris Pannullo played his match in the ToC. That was the 2nd game of the ToC that aired on Monday, February 26th.

  11. All I could think of was van Der Waals, but I knew the year predated him and much of what we now know about molecular theory.
