Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, April 5, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 5, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category U.S. Government) for Friday, April 5, 2024 (Season 40, Game 150):

The formation of the Brownell Committee out of concern over U.S. communications intelligence led to the 1952 creation of this body

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Andrew He, a stay-at-home dad from Concord, California
Andrew He on Jeopardy!
Victoria Groce, a writer & television personality from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Victoria Groce on Jeopardy!
Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California
Amy Schneider on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today is Game 1 of a first-to-2-victories final between Amy Schneider, Victoria Groce, and Andrew He. It’s also the 11th time that Amy and Andrew have been in the same episode; the past 10 meetings have seen Amy win 4, Andrew win 4, and the third player win 2.

One of the more intriguing parts of this matchup for me is going to be the buzzer battle between Amy and Victoria: both of them have been incredibly strong players on the buzzer, and the final might be decided by who gets the upper hand on the buzzer.

There’s one other important thing that I’d like to mention right now: I know that there are a lot of you who appreciate the work that I put out on the internet. However, there are other creators in the Jeopardy! community who also put out excellent work and aren’t doing as well as I am at this point. So, I’d invite you to go support Bella Bliss, who has put out a number of excellent long-form articles and compiles an all-time list of winnings. During the Korean War, President Harry Truman came to realize that the quality of strategic intelligence in the United States was regressing and was worse than the intelligence it had received during World War II. In response, a special committee was formed, chaired by New York lawyer George Brownell. It was recommended that a national communications intelligence agency be founded—national in that it was intended to deal with both armed forces and non-armed forces communications. By the end of 1952, the National Security Agency had been established, with General Ralph J. Canine as its first director.

Remember, this is the finals of a tournament of very strong players: our players should be able to move past the FCC and get to the actual correct response to this clue; the allure of communications to FCC would be too great for this to be an appropriate regular-play Final.

15 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, April 5, 2024"

  1. I focused too narrowly on “intelligence” and guessed “What is the C.I.A.?”

    • I didn’t go for CIA because I guessed it predated 1952. It did, but not by as much as I expected. I still didn’t get the correct answer, though.

  2. Michelle Bemis | April 5, 2024 at 9:59 am |

I knew it was NSA, but not sure if I would have been able to write out all three words in the 30 seconds. I wonder if the letters would be sufficient?

    J! airdate 2/9/2022

  3. Thank you for the shoutout, Andy! And I appreciate all that you do for the community as well.

  4. bill vollmer | April 5, 2024 at 5:11 pm |

Well, I didn’t go for the FCC, the mention of “intelligence” in the answer (clue) led me away from any thought I might possiblly might have about it. No, like Victoria, I went straight to the CIA.
Now if I had taken “communications,” and, “intelligence” together I just might have come up withthe NSA.
Sorry, Andrew. But the start of this final went the way I expected, with Amy, and, Victoria battling for dominance. Will this trend continue on Monday? Possibly. We’ll have to wait, and, see.

    • Robert J. Fawkes | April 5, 2024 at 5:43 pm |

I felt the same way, Bill. Contrary to Andy’s discussion, the inclusion of the word “intelligence” immediately knocked out any possibility of the FCC. That left either NSA or CIA. I chose NSA as I associated it with beginning in the 1950’s.

I was happy to see that Andrew had a sense of humor about the way the game went.

  5. As in her semifinal game, a remarkable comeback by Amy at the end of DJ that ended up making the difference. It is hard to believe Victoria did not buzz in first on any of the last 12 clues, even though they were low value ones. Did she just not buzz in fast enough, or was she playing it safe?

  6. Lyle Sieving | April 5, 2024 at 8:15 pm |

What a wonderful format. This year has been the best. Thank you jeopardy staff and Ken. I have been watching begining with Art until now there has never been a better season. Lyle

  7. That was certainly the most thrilling game of Jeopardy in recent memory for me.

  8. Where can I get Victoria Groces’ necklace she wore today?

  9. I was between FCC and NSA. Remembering that the FCC was involved in regulating radio in the 1930s, that left me with NSA. I correctly eliminated the CIA as an option, but with incorrect reasoning; now I know it wasn’t just a renaming of the OSS, but a new agency made after the dissolution of the OSS.

  10. I am very happy to see Amy win the first game, but I recognize that these are all brilliant players and any of them could win it all. It’s just lots of fun to watch them in action!

  11. Andrew re-ties Sam Buttrey for most losses all-time with 13.

On the flip side, Amy notches her 47th all time win, moving her past James Holzhauer and into sole possession of second most wins all time (behind Ken Jennings — 81).
