Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Bodies of Water) for Tuesday, April 9, 2024 (Season 40, Game 152):
The smallest inland sea in the world, it’s completely within the territory of a single country & connects 2 other larger seas
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Andrew He, a stay-at-home dad from Concord, California![]() |
Victoria Groce, a writer & television personality from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania![]() |
Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Could tonight be the final tournament game of Season 40 in syndication? Andrew He is certainly hoping that it isn’t; this is a must-win game for him tonight; a victory tonight sends this final to a winner-take-all Game 4. However, Victoria appears to have got the rhythm of the signalling device down perfectly—in last night’s game, she put up another 50 attempts and got in 29 times. This feels like Victoria’s tournament to lose at this point.
It should be noted that due to the UEFA Champions League this afternoon on CBS, today’s game is scheduled to air as early as 10:30 AM Eastern (9:30 AM Central) on KIMT (Mason City, Iowa).
Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Correct response: What is the Sea of Marmara?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The Sea of Marmara is located entirely within modern Turkey, connecting the Black Sea (via the Bosphorus Strait) and the Aegean/Mediterranean Sea (via the Dardanelles).
I think this clue should be straightforward for our players, maybe not as much for home viewers. If this clue ends up deciding the tournament, I would not be mad.

I guessed Sea of Galilee (though it’s technically a lake).
I didn’t know it was a lake. I fell into the same guess.
I was on the Sea of Galilee as a 12 year old in 1980. It was very nice.
I’d never heard of the Sea of Marmara. I couldn’t think of any body of water that would fit the clue. I had no guess. I like to at least venture an answer, but this time I drew a blank.
I never heard of it either so I just went with Sea of Galilee just to have something to put down; a wild guess is better than no guess.
Geographically, I was pretty sure I knew what they were looking for (I was right). Unfortunately, I did not know the name of the sea in question, and had to take a miss here.
Same here. I suspected that it was some sea between The Black Sea and the Mediterranean, but having no idea what the name of such a sea would be, I guessed Sea of Galilee as “better than no guess”.
Congratulations to Victoria for moving on to Jeopardy Masters. I was afraid that her appearances on The Chase might make her ineligible, but apparently the game show police are fine with this. I do know that anyone who has hosted Jeopardy! may no longer compete as a contestant on the show.
I guess that rule doesn’t extend to “people who are involved with other game shows”… for some reason.
Horray for Victoria! (Though nothing against the other two excellent contestants.) I find her to be very smart and very nice. A great combination!
I second everything you said. I just want to add that it’s nice to have a new face joining the Masters Tournament. Victoria is a worthy and welcome addition.

Amy Schneider 13
Sam Buttrey 13
Mattea Roach 11
I have thought geography was a strong suit of mine, then comes Jeopardy! which showed how little I know. Like today’s Final Jeopardy. When the answer (clue) was given, I had no idea what sea, or, even country it refered to. But Amy, Andrew, and, Victoria did. Congrats to the Chase’s “Queen” on her win.
Greg, and, Aaronthecrystalclod; Andy could explain the rule better than I. It should be on the Jeopardy web site, explaining who is eligible to be on Jeopardy. But I believe that concerns those who have competed on other game shows in a certain time frame. James Holzhauer appeared on the GSN version of the Chase as a contestant, others may have also, or, have played Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, even, possibly other shows.
Congrats to Victoria on a very impressive tournament! Amy is an all-time great and showed her grit with another late comeback in DJ. Andrew also is a formidable competitor. But Victoria clearly was the strongest of the three. It will be interesting to see how she fares in Masters.
Unusual to see all the Daily Doubles missed at this level of competition.
My MA in Geography came through for me here, it seems. My initial thought was Aral Sea, but since it isn’t between two other seas (and in the present day there’s a border that runs through what remains of it), I knew that wasn’t it, and Sea of Marmara was the next one to come to mind.
Would Amy have won if she bet less on that DD? Or would have Victoria adjusted her bet on the 3rd DD accordingly?
Even if Amy had bet only $5 on the DD, Andrew would still have been in second place at the point of Victoria’s DD (ceteris paribus), so Victoria’s calculus probably wouldn’t have changed much. Maybe Amy wins in that scenario. That said, the true DD was absolutely the correct bet.
Yeah.
I was rooting for Victoria and she came through with impressive gameplay….calm, cool and collected. Congrats Victoria! Looking forward to Masters with the new blood and the past favorites coming back.
Retro congrats to Victoria on a most impressive JIT win against 2 very formidable opponents. It will be great to see her on Jeopardy Masters. I see her giving that tournament a very strong go. 🙂
As for FJ, whatever! LOL 0 for my last 31. Now that we’re going back to regular play tomorrow, I’m going to guess that my O fer will end soon.
Looks to me like we’ll get 78 games of regular play before Season 40 ends.
Can Lucas Partridge extend his streak to 4 tomorrow. I’m definitely ready to see! 🙂
I somehow came through on the Final Jeopardy clue, but I don’t think I would have gotten it on time under pressure of the game. By some strange fluke I knew all three questions Victoria missed today, which surprised me since I didn’t have any idea on half the ones she got right. She amazed me with her wide-ranging knowledge, and her victory was as well-deserved as it was appropriate for her name.
