Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Joyce Yang, a data analyst from Germantown, Maryland
Joyce Yang on Jeopardy!
Michael Richter, an elections worker from Portland, Oregon
Michael Richter on Jeopardy!
Will Stewart, a political organizer originally from Nashville, Tennessee (1-day total: $25,601)
Will Stewart on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Important note: If you do not want to be spoiled on results, do not visit the show’s official website today. There appears to have been a date/time publishing mistake made on the website and results were accidentally posted early.

It’s time for a new week of Jeopardy!; this week, Will Stewart returns as champion and defends his title against Maryland’s Joyce Yang & Portland’s Michael Richter.

I just wanted to touch on briefly about the community reaction to my editorial on Saturday. While the community is divided to the point where it is clear that not everyone will agree with my words, I would like to point out that one of the main examples used to impugn my character proves one of the editorial’s major points regarding the composition of the fandom.

I have an occasional mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

If you’re looking for a quick rundown of what happened last week, I write a weekly recap column for Geeks Who Drink’s Questionist, released every Sunday. Yesterday’s column was titled “Threepeat Week”. You can also check out my Jeopardy! Masters recap column; yesterday’s was titled “Ups and Downs”. Questionist also has a newsletter that you can sign up for!

In the early 1950s, Cinecittà Studios in Rome, today the largest film studio in Europe, was the facility used for several major American films, including Quo Vadis, Roman Holiday, and Ben-Hur. During the filming of Quo Vadis, TIME Magazine coined the term “Hollywood on the Tiber” (the Tiber being Rome’s major river) to describe the number of American productions being produced in Italy.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • It seemed to me like Joyce might have been too conservative with ringing in; 0 incorrect responses and not attempting to take a guess on the final clue led me to believe that.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Will $18,600 Joyce $9,200 Michael -$400)

Will: Bet no more than $199. (Actual bet: $100)

Michael: (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)

Joyce: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $800)

  1. I was able to make the connection to what I believe to be the Trevi Fountain, but sadly, I don’t know Italian rivers very well. Or rivers of any country, for that matter. So a miss today… darn.

  2. “What is the Tiber?” I knew it runs through Rome. I didn’t know all those movies were filmed in Italy.

  3. There aren’t that many rivers that flow through Rome.

For those wondering, Cinecittà is pronounced Chin-a-cheetah.

  5. Speaking of Joyce being too conservative, I’d think she should go all in on Final Jeopardy just in case Will has a brain hiccup. And if I were Will I’d wager zero to not risk that brain hiccup – not worth that extra hundred bucks.

Andy, are they back on the usual taping schedule? Was this Monday episode the first episode taped on the taping day?

  7. Bill Vollmer | May 13, 2024 at 5:16 pm |

Today’s Final Jeopardy should give me a grade of incomplete. I never heard the term referred to in the “answer” (clue.) I also didn’t know that movies like “Three Coins in the Fountain” had been filmed in Rome.
But the fact that “Three Coins” and etc., lead be to believe the correctresponse would some river in Roome. Unfortunately, not knowing any riversin Rome, that was as far as I got.

  8. Movies made before like 1977 tend to be a weak spot of mine. I had no idea. I noticed the Latin but didn’t know if that was supposed to be a hint.

Also agree that Joyce didn’t take enough risks. I was like “What the [bleep]?” when she didn’t even guess, say, New York or Philadelphia on the last clue. That would have not only given her a shot to win today, it would have potentially given her second chance consideration. Which she’s not getting now. People who take chances get rewarded. I said so last week. Michael is more likely to get it but I don’t know. He just didn’t have a good game here.

Andy: Sorry the trolls and the covfefe are going after you. You do a lot of awesome work for this site and beyond – and I’m glad somebody is calling these toxic presences out. Keep it up and remember that some of us are on your side. People need to learn how to be nice and that’s all you were trying to say.

  9. Didn’t know this FJ.

Retro congrats to Will on a 2nd win and we’ll see tomorrow if he can get #3. I’m going to say yes!
