(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Georges Bizet’s famed opera character Carmen was first introduced in an 1845 Prosper Mérimée novella; Bizet’s opera was based upon Part III of the story. The story features  Carmen, then a cigar-factory worker, and robber-turned-factory guard José Lizarrabengoa. In the opera, José becomes Don José; in both stories, Carmen is murdered in a jealous rage after Carmen falls in love with another man. (And people actually wonder why so many women picked the bear.)

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Tuesday, May 7, 2024 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: “One” Of Those Books; Death In The Capital; It’s All Relative; Hodgepodge; TV Movies; Words In Jeopardy)

Despite five Triple Stumpers in the first fifteen clues, all three players’ scores were close at the interviews; Matthew had $2,200 to Allison’s $2,000 and Daniel’s $1,800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Matthew 3 correct 0 incorrect
Allison 4 correct 1 incorrect
Daniel 3 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Allison did a semester at sea when at university.
Daniel learned to skate in middle school and got into figure skating at Brown.
Matthew got to live at Times Square.

Coming right out of the break, Allison doubled up through the Daily Double, and that momentum carried her through to a lead after 30.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Allison 12 correct 2 incorrect
Matthew 6 correct 2 incorrect
Daniel 3 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Allison $5,800
Matthew $2,600
Daniel $1,200

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Around The Adriatic; Pronunciation Advice; Dinosaurs; Do You Know Your Ralphabet?; Pop Music; Tear U-S Apart)

Even though Daniel missed the best Daily Double ever, I 100% percent appreciate what the writers did. Allison went a little bit conservative on DD3, which meant that for the second game of a row, Matthew had a hint of a chance going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Allison 20 correct 4 incorrect
Matthew 10 correct 2 incorrect
Daniel 6 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 13 (3 today).

Scores going into Final:

Allison $11,800
Matthew $7,000
Daniel $2,000

Daniel was the only player correct in Final, but the betting situation makes Allison your new champion! She’ll return tomorrow to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Daniel $2,000 + $1,998 = $3,998 (Who is Carmen???)
Matthew $7,000 – $4,900 = $2,100 (Who is Maris?)
Allison $11,800 – $2,201 = $9,599 (Who is lady [scribbles]) (1-day total: $9,599)

Allison Gross, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the May 7, 2024 game.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • It’s great when you know exactly which of your Twitter interactions inspired not just a clue, but a Daily Double. Sorry, Daniel. But the pronunciation of “Newfoundland” is a pet topic of mine.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Allison $11,800 Matthew $7,000 Daniel $2,000)

Matthew: If you bet between $2,600 and $2,999, you can still pass Allison if she covers and is incorrect and keep Daniel locked out for second. (Actual bet: $4,900)

Daniel: Bet whatever you like, though I’d keep a couple of dollars back in case Matthew goes all in. (Actual bet: $1,998)

Allison: Standard cover bet over Matthew is $2,201. (Actual bet: $2,201)

Had absolutely no idea. Never heard of it and couldn’t even make a decent guess about a character from that era who wears a short skirt.

I then went over to Thrice and embarrassed myself similarly.

    • Thrice says cigarette instead of cigar, but I’m pretty sure they got it wrong.

  2. Now if they asked me from what opera did Gilligan’s Island use music when they performed a musical version of Hamlet, I would’ve known Carmen. This I did not know.

  3. Karen Hoover | May 7, 2024 at 10:01 am |

I guessed correctly…thanks to my dad who sang in the Dayton Opera Association!

  4. 1845, short skirt, and mantilla got me to Carmen.

    • Agreed, a final jeopardy that took my only a few seconds to come up with the correct answer.

    • I also knew this because of the year and the description of Carmen.

  5. I got “Who is Carmen?” right away.

  6. Bill Vollmer | May 7, 2024 at 5:15 pm |

In Chicago, approximately the first half of the Jeopardy round was prompted because of extreme weather coverage.
Anyone who follows the Jeopardy Fan, knows of Andy’s crusade on the correct pronunciation of Newfoundland, and, should not be surprised at his reaction to the first Daily Double in Double Jeopardy.
Now today’s Final Jeopardy was another where my brain from somewhere came up with “Who is Carmen?”. Again I was surprised when what my brain came up with was right again.
2 for 2 this week from having my brain find the correct responses.

  7. I didn’t care about the FJ (I had no idea since I wasn’t able to come up with a Spanish prose character from that early – forgot about the novella that spawned the opera), I just came here to see what you said about that Daily Double. I knew that was your doing and I’m not disappointed.

Here’s hoping Ken sticks with the correct pronunciation going forward, but the show has still kept with the mistranslated spelling of Turkiye (can’t do the umlaut on my phone, sorry, but it’s not spelled like the bird) after the correct one was alluded to on a Ben Chan DD, so I’m sadly not expecting it. But I can hope!

    • Writing Turkey instead of Türkiye is akin to writing Ivory Coast instead of Côte d’Ivoire. It still happens, after 38 years.

  8. Kudos to the writers, but it was a pity that the DD was missed!

  9. I missed Friday’s FJ by forgetting about a recent Spain-related Thrice questions, but didn’t get burned twice. I’d like to think I would’ve gotten this one even if it hadn’t come up today, though.

I’d also like to think I would’ve gotten the 2nd DD correct if I weren’t a regular reader of this site, but it wouldn’t have been with nearly as much confidence.

  10. When I saw that DD, all I could do was chuckle and think of you Andy! 🙂

As for FJ, I guessed Madonna. Not the singer. 0 for last 51. What is will the streak ever end?

On to lots of Jeopardy tomorrow and back to work after a 5 day weekend. 🙂
