Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 1, 2024, second game of Jeopardy! Masters — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. It will be updated alongside the Eastern Time airing of the show, beginning at about 8:30 PM Eastern.

This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:

Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California (0 points)
Amy Schneider in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
Yogesh Raut, a cognitive & behavioral scientist from Vancouver, Washington (0 points)
Yogesh Raut in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
James Holzhauer, the self-described “final boss” of Jeopardy! from Las Vegas, Nevada (0 points)
James Holzhauer in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

The second half of our season premiere features James Holzhauer, Yogesh Raut, and Amy Schneider.

Running this matchup through the prediction model:

To win:
James Holzhauer 46.992%
Yogesh Raut 26.753%
Amy Schneider 26.255%

To finish second:
Yogesh Raut 37.865%
Amy Schneider 36.900%
James Holzhauer 25.235%

James is clearly the strongest in the field, but both Yogesh and Amy are very capable of dominating a game for long stretches of time. Meanwhile, James will want to start the tournament on good footing.

As a reminder: the winner of this game receives 3 standings points in the tournament, while second place receives 1 standings point.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

The word “pedantic” comes to mind.

  2. I don’t even have the energy to be angry.

    I’m just sad.

  3. I had fears the 2 newcomers would be a huge force to be reckoned with. James had a year off and needs to get his buzzer timing down. As this story progresses I see James being less dominant but still near the top of the pack.

MasterDoge… I always read your comments with interest. I don’t really understand today’s comments. Any explanation?

I found today’s games interesting and I’m excited to see the Tournament unfold.

    I am excited

    • James and Matt are two of my all-time favorites. Yogesh is… not, let’s just say.

Seeing James be beaten rather soundly by Yogesh almost directly after seeing Matt fall to the same thing that screwed him so many times last year (late-ish True Daily Doubles gone wrong), especially this time (as he would have likely won, or at least placed a very close second, if he got his DD correct) was not very fun for me, and I’m not great at regulating my emotions. It’s also been a pretty trying week, which is always a lot of fun.

I know it’s kind of stupid, but that’s how I function, unfortunately.

I just have to keep telling myself – there’s plenty of time left in the quarterfinals, and both players can find their game again.

      • Once James gets the buzzer feel back he will be fine. His competition on this episode didn’t have a year layoff in jeopardy play

  5. At least through the first two games, the two newcomers to Jeopardy! Masters, Victoria and Yogesh, are upending the established order. We will see if that continues!

  6. Well, any Yogesh-Victoria match up is now must-see TV. I didn’t see GOAT, but I assume this is the first time James has been on the wrong end of a runaway?

  7. We can dispense with the notion that Yogesh struggles on the buzzer.

  8. I went with Damascus in FJ. Of course I was wrong, since I can’t hit a FJ, even if they asked me my last name. LOL.

Retro congrats to Yogesh on a dominating win….wow!

  9. I knew it was the capital of Malta…but I didn’t know what the capital of Malta is. “World capitals” is essential knowledge for Jeopardy!.
James was my favorite to win, but “final boss”, “main event”…pride goeth before a fall?

  10. James has bet:

    $310 twice (2019-11-12 — ToC semifinal; 2023-05-16 — Masters match day 6)
$3010 once previously (2019-04-11 — regular game 6, the only Final he missed in his original run)
    $31,010 twice (2019-04-12 & 2019-05-21, regular games 7 & 24)

    • During his regular play didn’t he say March 10th was his anniversary or child’s birthday?

      • $9,812 (September 8, 2012) was his anniversary, and $11,914 (or $110,914) (November 9, 2014) is his daughter’s birthday.

I do not believe he ever clarified the meaning behind $310/$3,010/$31,010.

Though I somehow knew that the Final Jeopardy refered to the Knights of Malta, even though I didn’t recognize thier official name (and, confusing them with the Knights Templar,) this was a loss for me, because I didn’t know the capital of Malta.
