Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I don’t know if it’s me being Canadian or too left-leaning or whatnot, but I thought this Final Jeopardy clue would have played easier than 0-for-2.

9 Comments on "Jeopardy! Masters Recap – Friday, May 17, 2024 (Game 2)"

  1. I have to say, I never expected to see a minus next to a Master’s Coryat score.

What a tough break for Amy. At least she has a couple more chances to bounce back on Monday.

  2. Some food for thought —

Might they reverse the order of Monday’s byes from what we think; that is, have Victoria sit out the first game, and Yogesh not play in the second?

Looking at the possible outcomes, I’m showing that the only one of the thirty-six in which Yogesh does not advance would be if Monday’s games go James-Amy-Yogesh and Amy-Victoria-James, leaving all four players on four points and one win. In this case, fewest correct responses would determine the player eliminated.

The breakdown I have is, that of the 36 scenarios, the eliminated player is —

    Amy: 18
James: 13 (three of which he loses by having no wins and three second places)
    Victoria: 3
Fewer correct responses, Victoria and Amy: 1
Fewest correct responses, all four players: 1

Regardless of who has the bye in the first game: if James wins it and Amy finishes third, Amy is eliminated before the last semifinal.

  3. I feel horrible for Amy right now… 🥺

Amy, I hope you can take a deep breath and bounce back! I never expected her to finish in the red. She now joins Matt Amodio on the list of Masters that didn’t make Final in one of their games.

  4. I came up with the correct response in a few seconds and also thought that it would be a double get, not that it could matter.

  5. I was thinking donkey for this FJ. WAY wrong!

  6. My FJ guess: “Big shoes to fill.” I must have a clown obsession.

I think that the producers thought they were doing Amy a favor by giving her the first bye and allowing her to avoid the defending champion James the first night. It made no difference, since Victoria and Yogesh are of equal caliber to James. Amy will need some luck to survive.

    • Your second paragraph is based on a wholly incorrect premise.

The pairings for the semifinals were based solely on quarterfinal placing and set in advance with no regard to who would be in those spots.

      Game 1: 1st-2nd-3rd
      Game 2: 1st-2nd-4th
      Game 3: 1st-3rd-4th
      Game 4: 2nd-3rd-4th

    • Gregory, “big shoes to fill” makes lots of sense for being used by FDR Jr. running for office in 1966, but not for a “concept” IMPLEMENTED by his father (rather than just SAID). When the category is ‘Also Seen At The Circus’, thinking of clowns is very reasonable.

I’d said ‘tentpole’, with no specific “implemented by FDR” in mind, just thinking it could apply to the main concept of several that were implemented.

  7. Andy, with regard to your saying “I don’t know if it’s me being Canadian or too left-leaning or whatnot, but I thought this Final Jeopardy clue would have played easier than 0-for-2.”, I think “safety net” has just become too generic (and circuses in great decline) since FDR’s time AND that in at least the last decade Social Security, disability insurance, unemployment insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, AFDC and other food aid are more often referred to as “entitlements”. Mostly I just think that FDR had SO MANY things implemented by him and circuses just have SO MANY things to see — the ‘Big Top’, the Ringmaster, the tentpole, the liontamer, clowns, clowncars, the rings, juggling, tightropes and trapezes themselves, that it is just very difficult to zone in on the common item in 30 seconds.

You usually have at least a half-dozen people on here commenting that they got FJ! correct, but today there was only one.
