Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Kelsey Kaunisviita Vockrodt, a stay at home mom from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Ty Patton, a communications specialist from Des Moines, Iowa![]() |
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (13-day total: $299,000)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
13-game winner Adriana Harmeyer goes for win #14 today against challengers Ty Patton and Kelsey Kaunisviita Vockrodt. Between wins #4 and #13—two days in real time—Adriana has won $227,400. Not bad for two days’ work! This will be her third consecutive day in the studio, though—we’re starting to get into uncharted territory here for superchampions; it’ll be interesting to see how this week goes!

Correct response: Who are Shakespeare & Schindler?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The two films are 1993’s Schindler’s List and 1998’s Shakespeare in Love; the real people are, in the first case, Oskar Schindler, the man who saved thousands of Jewish refugees from the Holocaust by employing them in his factories and whose act was immortalized in the book Schindler’s Ark and later film. The second is William Shakespeare, who, quite frankly, needs no introduction—though the 1998 film depicts a fictional love affair between Shakespeare and Viola de Lesseps during Shakespeare’s writing of Romeo and Juliet.
For a player who has the Best Picture winners of the 1990s memorized, this should be a straightforward Final. For a player who doesn’t, this might be more of a struggle.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Adriana $16,200 Ty $13,400 Kelsey $2,200)
Adriana: Standard cover bet over Ty is $10,601. (Actual bet: $10,800)
Ty: If Adriana makes a cover bet and is incorrect, she falls to $5,599. Thus, you should bet between $5,601 (twice the score difference when you’re within 80% of the leader’s score defends against any small bets the leader might make) and $7,800. (Actual bet: $13,399)
Kelsey: Bet whatever you like; however, Adriana has been betting more than cover here—there’s a chance she might overbet and bring you back into contention. The more money you have after Final, the better the chances of that happening. (Actual bet: $0)

I got Schindler but time ran out before I could get the other ‘S’.
That’s funny. I came up with Shakespeare immediately but couldn’t think of Schindler.
Shakespeare stood out for me too, mainly because it didn’t deserve it( imo)
Ironically, that’s probably why I forgot it 🙂
SiL didn’t deserve it. Saving Private Ryan should have won — and we never would have had this Final Jeopardy question. According to the stories, Weinstein knew how to wine and dine enough of the voting members to get his picture the win. Harrison Ford had announced Schindler’s List in 1994; he also announced Shakespeare in Love in 1999. Many were surprised; some were not. A history of dubious campaigning for votes at the Oscars is at https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20240307-oscars-1999-controversial-best-picture-win .
The only other decade: the thirties ( Zola and Ziegfeld) beyond that Patton, Ghandi and Oppenheimer
Amadeus, no?
Since the clue reads “by name” instead of “first name” or “last name”, Amadeus should qualify because it was Mozart’s middle name.
The category specifies last names, though.
Hello Jeff,,,,I’m also Jeff 😉
I remembered Shindler but not Shakespeare. I would not even get half credit.
I’ve guessed Shakespeare and then remembered that there was Shakespeare in Love (which I have not seen), but even after calculating the birth year of the other person, I could not remember Schindler in time.
I am very impressed that 2 of the contestants got this correct! I join the many others who did not.
Roll on, Adriana!
Congratulations on Adriana winning her 14th game. She is averaging $23,285 per win. Keep it going…
I wish I could say that like Adriana, and Ty, I had the correct response to this Final Jeopardy. Unfortunately, I can’t. I think I would have to be figuratively living isolated in a cave not to have heard of either Schindler, or, Shakespeare. Of course I’ve heard of Schindler, thanks to Spielberg’s film, and, I also know of Shakespeare the playright (plus I think I’d heard of Shakespeare in Love {but not what it was about.}
But didn’t know the years of their premiere’s. But, even if I did know the premiere dates, don’t think my mind would have linked them.
I was thinking Braveheart (Wallace) and ———.
Since the clue referred to the 1990’s, I used that as a starting point to figure out who was born more than 344 years ago. Figuring the other person had to be, at least, 20 or more years old by the 1990’s, I used 1950 as a base year and subtracted 344. That got me to 1606, which was close enough to make one of the people Shakespeare. From there, it meant another person whose last name began with an “S.” Thinking back to 1990’s movies, that led me to Schindler. Not sure if I would have gotten that in 30 seconds under the stage lights and all, but I did come up with the two names I needed. Had to be more than 30 seconds though.
I’d like to thank my time doing Sporcle quizzes about Best Picture winners (some of which are just through 1999) for leading me to Shakespeare in Love after I’d already gotten Schindler.
Also, I think I get now why people who aren’t the most intelligent watch Jeopardy – as you’ve said before, to feel intellectually superior when they know something these trivia whizzes don’t get. For me, I got Lord Rayleigh given how I have an OC named Rayleigh (a female, mind you), which came about because “Ryleigh” (the first name idea I had) autocorrected to that. I looked it up, found the unit of photon flux named for the astronomer and found it pretty apt, and based on the time period and blue skies, figured it had to be him. However, unlike some of those viewers, I fully admit that these contestants far outclass my own abilities. But man, did it feel good to know something that obscure! Haven’t really felt that before.
I just couldn’t get there on the FJ tonight and I was having a bit of a hard time with the clue, but that’s on me. Oh well, try again tomorrow.
I see that there’s another “Jeff” that commented earlier in the thread, but it wasn’t me. 😉
Retro congrats to Adriana! Win #14! Amazingly good stuff. Does anyone else think Ty could get a Second Chance?
Go Go Adriana in the quest for #15 tomorrow night.
