Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Show Biz Marriages) for Thursday, July 18, 2024 (Season 40, Game 224):
Married since 1977, the year of this band’s 1st album, 2 members referenced another album with their 2023 “Remain In Love” tour
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Meredith Miller, a labor economist from Arlington, Virginia![]() |
Micah Rahn-Tiemeyer, a mental health crisis therapist from Grand Rapids, Michigan![]() |
Jay Fisher, a government relations manager from Lisle, Illinois (2-day total: $16,199)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
As we get closer to the end of Season 40, with today being the seventh-to-last episode of the season, Jay Fisher enters the game as a 2-day champion. He’ll face off against Micah Rahn-Tiemeyer and Meredith Miller in an attempt to win game #3. One thing that Jay has been very strong in is that his only incorrect responses have been in Final Jeopardy thus far; he has zero unforced errors in his two victories. Whether that means he could stand to be more aggressive on the buzzer is still to be seen, but his current style of play has been working for him to date.
Micah chose to introduce himself to Reddit before today’s game; many years ago, I might have taken that as a sign that he would do well. However, today’s contestants are encouraged to post about their appearance on social media in the days leading up. I would say that the pride of the accomplishment of getting on the show—much like I referred to in a recent editorial surrounding why contestants should always host watch parties—means that I don’t think that posting about one’s appearance in advance is an automatic sign that the player will win.
Today’s game will see a continuation of pre-emptions in many locations, especially on the West Coast, due to coverage of the Republican National Convention. You should check your local listings (or, Matt Carberry has put together a spreadsheet of pre-emptions.)

Correct response: Who are the Talking Heads?

Two members of the American new wave band Talking Heads, Chris Frantz (drums) and Tina Weymouth (bass), have been married since 1977; the 2023 UK tour of the married couple was named “Remain In Love” in reference to the 1980 Talking Heads album Remain in Light.
The key for anyone trying to solve this clue is to move away from the reflexive 1977 + music + married band members—I think the likeliest wrong answer to this clue is going to be Fleetwood Mac. Whether the players know enough about music to get to the correct answer, though, is still to be seen.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Micah $8,000 Jay $6,600 Meredith $6,000)
Jay: You can’t both cover Meredith and win a Triple Stumper. Either bet $599 or less or $5,401 or more. (Actual bet: $5,401)
Micah: Standard cover bet over Jay is $5,201. (Actual bet: $5,201)
Meredith: If Micah covers Jay and is incorrect, he falls to $2,799. Thus, I would bet between $2,001 and $3,200 in this position. (Actual bet: $4,500)

I did go for Fleetwood Mac! Actually didn’t really think either Fleetwood Mac or Talking Heads were still together and touring🤦♀️🤷♀️
Me too 🙈
Lisa: “Who are ‘The Smiths’?” 😄
I thought of Bon Jovi. The Talking Heads never came to mind…Bon Jovi is still touring.
Bon Jovi was formed in 1983.
I went with B52’s. I thought maybe Kate or Cindy was married to one of the guys. Cindy is the sister of Ricky who was gone too soon.
This has been not my week for Final Jeopardys. When I seen today’s answer, all I could come up with was “What is ABBA?” Not even sure if the couples are still together, they generally don’t perfrom together anymore. So that wasn’t even in the same universe as the correct response of “Who are the Talking Heads?” I know of the existence of the group, but details as to comprises the group, what there music is, no idea.
Yeah, I also went with Fleetwood Mac, though I doubted that there were any pairs in it REMAINING married in 2023. I KNOW OF the Talking Heads, but the only thing I knew ABOUT them was the name of the band and that they are a favorite of Mattea Roach. [They are not her most favorite, but she has two Talking Heads tattoos and talked about them several times during various appearances on Jeopardy!]
This was one of those finals where I thought it might make a difference what generation you are in. My music is more along the lines of 1950’s and 1960’s. I would have gone with Fleetwood Mac, too.
Being more aware of the music of more recent generations would’ve certainly helped. As I said above, I kknow of the Talking Heads (Fleetwood Mac, and/or,the B-52s) but that is really about it.
I didn’t even touch Fleetwood Mac because I was very aware that none of those couples was still together, and the two who were actually married, John and Christine, saw Christine passed before 2023. The first thought I had was Peaches & Herb, but I didn’t think they ever were married. The next thought was Captain & Tennille, but I knew that Daryl had passed before 2023 as well. Then I thought of ABBA, but knew they’d all divorced by the mid 80s. I just couldn’t come up with Talking Heads, and when I saw the correct response, I thought “ah! Tina and Chris…how could I forget?”
Also, I didn’t think that the wording implied that their 2023 tour was with the band with the album that the tour name referenced, just that they were both in the band that started in 1977. And it seems that it was a tour with just Tina and Chris, not even with Tom Tom Club.
I knew this having read Chris Frantz’s book Remain In Love and being a big fan of Talking Heads. I must have seen the band 15 times back in the day. The wording of the question was a little awkward regarding who was touring and what the tour was about. Also, this was a tough one for younger contestants as the group broke up in the 80s; or at least David Byrne decided to end the group.
The former President spoke too long tonight and 2 ABC game shows pre-empted Wheel and Jeopardy, unless they come on overnight, but I’m not staying up to find out.
So I came here and didn’t know the answer to FJ. The Talking Heads are an awesome band!
Good night everyone! Have a great Friday!
I had no idea, but I knew Rumours (released in 1977) was not Fleetwood Mac’s first album and ruled them out. You really had to key in on the album name and be familiar with Talking Heads discography to get this one.
Come with me to the Casbah.
Thanks for letting we West Coasters know what happened. We really got shortchanged this week. Tuesday we saw the very end of Double J and the Final, Wednesday all but the first couple of minutes, and last night none. Our ABC affiliate decided to show what was scheduled (albeit great delayed) after trump was done, and by the time those were over it was 11 pm. It didn’t look like they would show Jeopardy since other stuff including paid programming was on the menu. Grrrrrr… Venting… back to normal on Friday!
