There are certainly a number of various news items for me to talk about in terms of Jeopardy! this week. Here we go:
- Congratulations to Ike Barinholtz, who, with his father Alan, won the top prize this past week on the recent Celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?
My friends over at Geeks Who Drink have introduced a daily trivia game—Thrice! Existing to make daily clever trivia content accessible to a wide audience, it's a daily challenge that tries to get you to the answer via three separate clues. It has a shareable score functionality to challenge your friends and new questions every day will give you a new daily social ritual. You can find it at thricegame.com.

- Pop Culture Jeopardy! begins filming today; it will be an 81-team 40-episode single-elimination tournament. Further information about the format:
- Each episode will feature three teams of three—all nine players will be on stage at the same time. Each team will also have a team name/uniform motif.
- Each of the nine players can try to ring in on a clue. When a player successfully gets in, they respond without consultation.
- If a player is incorrect, a team can’t rebound its own miss.
- For Final Jeopardy and Daily Doubles, teams may consult on both wager and response.
- Prizes range from $1,500 per team (eliminated in the first round) to $300,000 for the overall championship team.

- The general consensus from the Inside Jeopardy event at SporcleCon was that it was an excellent event. The only major news I would say is that the “live” game that was played in both NYC and Detroit (which, by all accounts, played very well in Detroit) will be rolled out as the Jeopardy! bar trivia game in the near future.
- I don’t really see too much of a need to beat a dead horse, even though Reddit’s most recent “Chicken Little” act regarding ratings is going to fuel another week’s worth of tabloid articles. Once again, the show is generally one of the most-watched programs on American broadcast television—the show is fine and it seems very weird for the group of so-called “fans” to constantly bash the show on Reddit.
- News reports are that the Australian version of Jeopardy! is now casting for Australian expats living in the United Kingdom; the Australian version uses the UK version’s set. I’m actually a little bit surprised by this update myself, but the shared set does make for significant production cost savings.
- On a more personal note, there is a chance that Hurricane Ernesto (or remnants thereof) will strike the St. John’s area on Monday evening. Please rest assured that I will stay as safe as I can.
I hope everyone has a great week!

Firstly and post importantly, I’m glad to hear you’re staying safe. When Ernesto made landfall on Bermuda this morning, the notification on my phone said it might go on to “swipe Canada”; I immediately thought of Newfoundland and of you.
On Pop Culture Jeopardy! — I think that segment might have been better split off into a stand alone post. That is news being newly broken, after all; the post could have been filed under that heading. It would have also given you space to add your own thoughts on the format and team interaction rules (under an “Editorially…” paragraph).
Most especially, you would have the opportunity to discuss how your thoughts on Jeopardy! as a team game have evolved over the last four years. My assumption is that they have evolved; you are on the record as stating unequivocally: “Jeopardy! is an individual game, not a team game.” (October 7, 2020; emphasis in original.) Does the fact that PCJ sits outside of the “main franchise,” like Sports and Rock & Roll, distinguish the two cases? The cynical instinct — that team Jeopardy! is OK now because Mike Richards didn’t devise it — runs up against the fact that October 2020 is before you really turned against Richards.
Something really unfortunate I’ll relate. Given that this post did break news, I thought it worthy of a thread on r/Jeopardy, and so I linked it as a new post. It still, after several hours, awaits moderator approval; I’m not holding my breath for that to come through. I’m inclined to think that the Automod for the sub now flags TJ!F links, as it does those of The US Sun. If so, it’s a misstep by that moderation team. If they’ve imposed a ban on linking to TJ!F in the aftermath of the exchange in May, they’ve now shot themselves in the foot. This information would be of great interest to r/Jeopardy; by barring discussion of it, the mods have acted contrary to the best interests of the community, in my opinion.
As far as “Chicken Little,” etc. — I expected that post to not be well received when I saw it yesterday afternoon. An initial reaction I had to this was to recall your headline nine weeks ago; “Use Numbers, Not Vibes.” On that basis, I definitely did think, “Jay has used numbers — Andy’s moving the goalposts.” But his post, and your response here, illustrate the gulf between you on this; that’s plainly apparent from what you each compare the show’s current performance to. Your frame of reference is the other shows on television right now, against which Jeopardy! competes; Jay’s frame is the show’s own performance at the same time last year. And finally, I certainly don’t blame you for not wanting to beat a dead horse; after all, you’re already made the “maximum demand” of the mods (that they resign en masse, and do so yesterday). Though they rejected it, it hasn’t been withdrawn or modified, and thus stands as the editorial position of TJ!F. There’s not much further you can go, is there?
Glad you’re staying safe, happy for Ike and his father, Pop Culture Jeopardy sounds like a headache, Sporcle is great, the Australian version is probably just a test run, and… those people on Reddit aren’t true fans, they’re just serial whiners who feel like they have no purpose in life if they’re not complaining about something. The way they thought reruns were a new thing was pretty sad, though. Research it like a real fan would. This is a show for smart people, after all.
One other tidbit revealed at SporcleCon is that Buzzy wrote material for Pop Culture Jeopardy – this having the trifecta of playing, hosting and writing Jeopardy games
Will have to see how Pop Culture Jeopardy plays out when it premires on Prime.
Matt Carberry mentioned the late (lamented? unlamented?) Rock & Roll Jeopardy, Rob I. mentioned that Buzzy Cohen has now completed a trifecta of playing, hosting, and, writing Jeopardy (hasn’t he also “hosted” a video clue category, or, more?)
Anyway IF Jeopardy Productions/Sony Pictures Television and MTV Networks?Viacom/Skydance were to get together and have a new version of Rock & Roll (Music) Jeopardy air, could there be a better prospective host than Buzzy? A Jeopardy champ, who in “everday” life is an music executive?
