Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category History & The Movies) for Friday, November 1, 2024 (Season 41, Game 40):
This 1935 Best Picture Oscar winner tells of a 1789 event near the isolated Pacific volcano of Tofua
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Sam Cameron, a finance manager from Fargo, North Dakota
|
Julie Phillips, an attorney from Alexandria, Virginia
|
Greg Jolin, a system specialist & accountant from Raymond, New Hampshire (1-day total: $24,001)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Picking up nearly half of the correct responses in yesterday’s game, Greg Jolin took a strong first victory. Today, he looks to win his second game against Julie Phillips and Sam Cameron.
You may have heard about the lawsuit yesterday where Sony Pictures is suing CBS Television Distribution over its syndication contract. As of the time of this writing, I have partially read the complaint and found it eye-opening; if the allegations contained within are true, this is the culmination of a number of actions over a number of years and I have to say that I am disappointed that it has reached this point.

Correct response: What is Mutiny on the Bounty?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Mutiny on the Bounty is a famous 1935 film, starring Clark Gable as Fletcher Christian, dramatizing the famous 1789 mutiny on the HMS Bounty of Christian seizing control of the ship from captain William Bligh. Christian and the mutineers were upset at their treatment by Bligh, took over the ship near Tofua, cast Bligh and his loyalists onto a boat, and set sail for Tahiti. Eventually, Fletcher Christian ended up on Pitcairn Island after having abducted a number of Tahitians.
I’d also like to talk about an important distinction today, and kudos to the writing staff for its correct writing today: Being that the film was released in 1935, it is correctly considered “this 1935 Best Picture Oscar winner”. It is not “this 1936 Best Picture Oscar winner” due to the award being given in 1936; anyone contending this online later today would be 100% incorrect and needs to be informed as such before the show receives undue criticism over the writing of this clue. Any confusion regarding that wording would be 100% the fault of the viewer and not the show. Additionally, anyone making a comment who clearly has not read this paragraph will not have their comment approved.

This was the only historical event I could think of that would have occurred at that time that had been made into a movie. An interest in nautical explorations (and movies) made this more than just a guess for me.
I knew it right away from 1935 and 1789. The volcano part was an unnecessary distraction. And I agree with your comment about describing a picture by the year in which it was made rather than the year in which it received an award. Oppenheimer was Best Picture of 2023, not 2024.
When I was verifying my guess this morning after reading the FJ! clue online, I saw that Mutiny on the Bounty was apparently the last Best Picture winner to ONLY win Best Picture. It lost in the other six or seven nominations it had received.
If you know what the Oscar for Best Picture in 1935 was, that the mutiny happened in 1789, or, the location of the mutiny, this Final Jeopardy would be straight forward for you. Unfortunately, I knew none of this, so I couldn’t give an intelligent response. I’m not complaining, this week alone there was a “straight fprward” that I got, because I knew some of what the FInal jeopardy clue (answer) refered to, and, in past shows there were others that Igot,or, missed.
Finished the week a very respectable 3 for 5.
I didn’t know any of that either, but I thought about movie plots that might have taken place in that general area and would have likely been of interest to filmmakers and movie-goers of that era and came up with the guess of “What is Mutiny on the Bounty?” I was fairly surprised to have been correct. The other two movies I thought of were ‘Lost Horizon’ and ‘King of Siam’ but doubted they referenced a volcano. Turns out the former was released a couple or so years later and the latter over a decade later.
Rather than the two dates giving me the answer, it was one date (1789) and the location that gave it to me.
Even though the 1962 version was considered a flop, I rather liked it when I saw it on a big screen in a movie theater of the 1960’s. I’m old but not that old to have seen the original in first run. 🙂
Unfortunately, I was only familiar with the 1962 movie with Marlon Brando, and the year 1789 which led me to think about the French, resulted in a total blank.
Thanks for sharing these insights on the latest Jeopardy! episode. It’s always fascinating how a historical event can be captured so vividly in film. I love discovering these bits of trivia through your posts.**
Curious about the strategy tips you mentioned! How do contestants typically decide their bets in Final Jeopardy? It’s such a crucial part of the game.
Looking forward to more!”
I didn’t know. This is getting repetitive. Lol. 0 for 5 for the week and 5 for 40 for the season.
Monday and Tuesday next week will the 2 shows I saw taped on September 23rd.
