Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Phrase Origins) for Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (Season 41, Game 42):
In 1935 an article popularized this term for the part of the U.S. where residents were “depending on rain”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Chuck Rea, a director of software engineering originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania![]() |
Priscilla Gruenewald, a retired writer & editor from Nipomo, California![]() |
Greg Jolin, a system specialist & accountant from Raymond, New Hampshire (3-day total: $75,002)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Greg Jolin is averaging $25,000 a victory over his first three wins on Jeopardy. Today, he goes for win #4 against Priscilla Gruenewald and Chuck Rea.
I do feel obligated to point out that yes, today still has a first-run game set to air despite it being Election Day. This is because the show isn’t pre-empted by election coverage in every market. Do check your local listings, though—the show is airing earlier than usual in at least one market.

Correct response: What is the Dust Bowl?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
In an article by AP reporter Robert Geiger, the term “Dust Bowl” was coined to refer to the drought-affected areas of the south central United States in the 1930s, including western Kansas, southeastern Colorado, northeastern New Mexico, and the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Many crops in the area were destroyed by a lack of rainfall, high temperatures, and high winds, and many in the area migrated away in search of work—especially to California.
This feels like another generally straightforward U.S. history Final Jeopardy clue to me. I expect that most of my regulars here in the comment section will get this one correct.

Considering the date, this was the first and only thing that came to my mind.
Same. A couple weeks ago I also guessed dustbowl on a clue, but it was wrong then – I knew if I kept guessing it, eventually it had to be correct.
Too funny, Mark0!
Jeopardy will air at 2:30 am Wednesday on ABC in the Washington Metropolitan Area,
Just over half of all stations airing Jeopardy! will not air today’s episode at all; a handful will break from election coverage to air it late night (like WJLA in DC), another handful will move it to another station (as in Atlanta, where it moves from WXIA [NBC] to WATL [MyTV]).
And a few are moving it up — most notably WTSP (CBS Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL); that’s the 9:30 AM station today.
Anyone know about NYC?
Most listings I’ve seen say it won’t air at all on WABC. (But the ones on their site show J! and Wheel airing in their usual slots, with election coverage beginning at 8:00; I don’t put much stock in that.)
As far as I can tell, in my lifetime, only two ToC-qualifying contestants (in regular play) hailed from New Hampshire in their initial run – Kerry Greene (2015) and Maureen O’Neil (2022).
I’m very happy to see that number become three today – well done, Greg! 🙂
On this election day, here in the SF Bay Area, today’s Jeopardy! will air tomorrow morning at 4 am. Whoa!!!
I could only think of “arid zone” as a reference to false etymology for Arizona.
I have only myself for not correctly understanding this Final Jeopardyclue (answer.) I understood it to be referring to the residents of the region talked about in the article, notthe region itself. I’ve heard of the term “Dust Bowl.” maybe if I had correctly understood what the clue )answer) was referring to, I might’ve gotten it .But I didn’t.
It’s the easier clues that read so quickly that without realizing it one may key in on the word [such as ‘residents’] that strikes a chord rather than the usual language used by Jeopardy! to indicate the subject of the clue — in this case: “this term for the PART of the U.S.” I’m sure they used the word ‘part’ instead of ‘area’ intending to make the clue a wee bit less easy.
Also, I suspect that subconsciously you did think of the Dust Bowl, but was thinking of it generically as the dust bowl (and not even in words) and because you had [presumably] known the refugees from there were called ‘Okies’, that is what you were trying to think of and since it didn’t come to you, you had no reason to double-check your response [when you would likely have realized that it was asking for the area, not the residents].
The year and “depending on rain” were all you needed to come up with, “What is the Dust Bowl?” It’s pretty much another TINA (there is no alternative). “The Grapes of Wrath” set this firmly in my mind. A great read by John Steinbeck.
Well, the show from Election Night is on right now here on Wednesday! Might continue that way the rest of the week with Friday’s show on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. I guess I’ll see as I watch the rest of the week.
This was the 2nd (of 2) tapings I was at on September 23rd. I should have gotten this FJ correct while in studio, but nope! 0 for 2 on the week and 5 for 42 on the season.
The very nice lady from Boston that I met at the taping got this FJ correct.
Greg had a huge win in his 4th game.
Do to not knowing what episode won’t be on tomorrow, I won’t be checking Wednesday’s results now.
