Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 12, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category TV Props) for Thursday, December 12, 2024 (Season 41, Game 69):

A prop central to the title character on this ’60s sitcom began as a special Christmas edition whiskey decanter

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Alex Cousins, a writer & editor from Buffalo, New York
Alex Cousins on Jeopardy!
Ashley Chan, a publicist from Lewisville, Texas
Ashley Chan on Jeopardy!
Bill McKinney, a VP of restaurants & bars originally from Boston, Massachusetts (3-day total: $46,800)
Bill McKinney on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Bill McKinney has won all three of this week’s games after a runaway victory yesterday, and goes for win #4 today against Lewisville, Texas’s Ashley Chan and Buffalo, New York’s Alex Cousins. Regardless of what happens, he’s already positioned reasonably well for the 2026 postseason at this point—but a fourth victory would certainly help matters.

The prop bottle, which held the title genie (Jeannie) in I Dream of Jeannie, is in the Smithsonian, and is described as a “repurposed 1964 Jim Beam Christmas edition glass whiskey decanter painted with Middle Eastern design motifs on a purple base paint layer”.

Meanwhile, we’re at the point where I’m curious to see how Reddit will choose to complain about this Final Jeopardy clue, as it seems to me that their two favorite pastimes these days are “complaining about Final Jeopardy” and “attempting to erase and minimize my accomplishments”—both of which happened in various places yesterday.

9 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, December 12, 2024"

  1. Wow. Tough TV trivia. I guessed “Sanford and Son,” thinking that Fred may have taken a swig from a whiskey bottle on occasion.

    • Gregory, I said the same thing because I remembered Fred taking a drink from time to time. I was fixated on a liquid coming out of a whiskey decanter. I know now “Sanford and Son” was a 70s sitcom, but the decades blend together a little for me that far back.

    • That was my first thought, too, but also thinking that he likely had favorite junk items and a special Christmas edition whiskey decanter would make a good “decor” item for him to be pleased with.

However, I almost immediately then thought of the bottle found by Major Nelson, so said “What is I Dream of Jeannie”.

I wonder if the ones putting Dick Van Dyke guessed that because he was frequently falling, particularly in the opening (which is still frequently seen during references to him or his show). [BTW, Dick Van Dyke will be 99 years old tomorrow — Friday the 13th.]

      • If you haven’t done this before, watch Dick Van Dyke’s fall over the hassock in slo-mo, and you’ll see how skillfully he choreographed it.

  2. I knew this because I’d only heard it several times before. I don’t think I could have figured it out if I didn’t know it.

    • Wish I had. I didn’t translate decanter to bottle. If I had, I might’ve come up with Jeannie, falling into the same trap as Bill who played the game on stage in Culver City. The answer clue refers to a “prop essential to the title character of this 60’s sitcom.”
In other words, if you know what the prop is, who is it critical to, then you’ll know the show from the 60’s. Which is the correct response.

  3. That was one of my favorite shows as a kid, but I never would have equated the bottle with a whiskey decanter, nope.

Andy, if this makes you feel any better, I would guess about 99% of your readers don’t read Reddit. I don’t even know (or care) what it is.

    • I kind of know what Reddit is but only read something on it if I search a subject and one of the hits is in Reddit and sounds reasonable. ‘Jeopardy!’ or ‘Andy Saunders’ is not something I would search on anyway, but surely everyone knows that almost everything on Reddit is just opinions and lots of people express ridiculous opinions (though I agree that it is very annoying when they do).

Rhetorical question: Who cares what people on Reddit think, say or write?

I wouldn’t really let any of that bother me.
