Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, December 23, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 23, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Leaders) for Monday, December 23, 2024 (Season 41, Game 76):

In 2009 this leader gave Barack Obama the book “Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jenifer Miller, a freelance web developer from Ann Arbor, Michigan
Jenifer Miller on Jeopardy!
Sean Maguire, a commercial real estate manager from New York, New York
Sean Maguire on Jeopardy!
Laura Faddah, a manager from Memphis, Tennessee (2-day total: $17,000)
Laura Faddah on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The final week of regular play for a while in Season 41 begins with Laura Faddah entering as a 2-day champion; she faces off today against New York’s Sean Maguire and Ann Arbor’s Jenifer Miller. At this point, I can already predict that Ken is going to mention Laura’s conservative wagering during his opening—and those both in the game and in the audience should pay attention to Ken’s words. While I would still prefer Ken not mention strategy on a Monday, I am becoming resigned to the fact that it likely will happen—and will definitely take that into account going forward when making my own strategic suggestions.

It’s also Christmas Week—which means that we’re going to see preemptions this week—especially on Wednesday if you watch the show on ABC. (Thankfully, the show is syndicated—a concept which appears to flummox many who write about this show for tabloids—which means we don’t have a nationwide preemption on Wednesday.) Hugo Chávez, who served as the President of Venezuela from 1999 until 2013, was also a major adversary of American foreign policy during his presidency. At the 5th Summit of the Americas in 2009, Chávez gave a Spanish copy of Open Veins to Obama; the book is an analysis of the impact that European settlement, imperialism, and slavery had in Latin America, and the Eduardo Galeano work has generally been an important reference for socialist thought in Latin America.

I get the sense that most viewers would likely have forgotten that this happened and the most likely way in for people might be, “What leader of that era would most likely gift such a work to Obama?” while also having to remember that Obama didn’t really visit with Castro and Cuba until 2016. It’ll be interesting to see how this Final plays; it wouldn’t surprise me to see our third Triple Stumper in a row.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • The fact that there was only one clue played after the last Daily Double, despite there having been a recent “less than a minute” call that was less than a minute, is a result of a rule instituted by the show a few years ago requiring that all Daily Doubles be played. The show can’t announce “less than a minute” until that Daily Double is found, just in case the contestants switch categories, but we were clearly running short of time at its finding as well.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

17 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, December 23, 2024"

  1. Guessing a South American leader during that time, I went with Cristina Fernandez.

  2. I went with Castro

    • If it had been “Castro’, you’d have to have been more specific since in 2009, it was Raúl, not Fidel who was in power.

      • My losing streak continues. I forgot about the Socialist President of Venezuela, and, fell into the Castro trap. Even worse not specifying Raul, just using the last name.

  3. I said Hugo Chavez, simply because I couldn’t think of anyone else.

  4. “The fact that there was only one clue played after the last Daily Double, despite there having been a recent “less than a minute” call that was less than a minute, is a result of a rule instituted by the show a few years ago requiring that all Daily Doubles be played. Are there circumstances in which the last DD isn’t played? This rule seems, to me, like an anti-stalling reaction, but that is just a guess. Does the show live with the time problems and then try to correct in editing? Thanks.

  5. The association Obama with the rapprochement with Cuba and lack of such association with Venezuela led me to Fidel Castro. I didn’t know the exact year that Castro handed power to his brother, which would have helped.

If there’s a rule that all DDs must be played, it seems there could be a rule that all clues must be played. I would be in favor of it.

    • If there’s a rule that all DDs must be played, it seems there could be a rule that all clues must be played

Precisely. What would they have done if the DD was the last clue opened?
They would have to edit the episode somehow to bring it under the time constraints, that’s all. With today’s video editing tools, it should not be that hard.

  6. Based on the pretentious book title, I guessed Chavez and I was right!

  7. Andy made a good point on his “Andy’s Thoughts” column. There has not been a daily double unplayed since 10/2020. Every Daily Double has been played in this post-Alex Trebek era

  8. Robert J. Fawkes | December 23, 2024 at 8:40 pm |

I went with Chávez but only included his last name. Would that have been sufficient under the parameters of the clue and category?

  9. Robert J. Fawkes | December 23, 2024 at 8:46 pm |

Under unplayed clues, the following is included, “Number of clues left unrevealed this season: 21 (0.28 per episode average), 0 Daily Doubles.” Is there any point in showing “0 Daily Doubles” since by rule they must be played? Seems superfluous.

    • Hello to Robert and Andy!

Robert – I think you are making a valid point.

Andy – I think it is quite useful to know the number of unrevealed clues this season [especially for comparison], I am not sure of the utility of the ‘per episode average’ calculation. Any comment?

  10. I remember this happening and there being an entire fake controversy about it. I’m surprised it was considered to be a stumper, correctly.

  11. I’m pretty sure I’d never heard about this, but guessed it was likely to be the President of Venezuela but could not remember his name.

[I had Pinochet in my head and couldn’t overcome that. If I could have remembered Calderón, I might have said him due to not remembering Chavez’s name, but I was actually more likely to remember “Hugo Chavez”. I even tried to remember the name Zapatero to be funny, but, yet again, I was more likely to finally remember “Hugo Chavez”.]
