Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Mythology) for Tuesday, January 21, 2025 (Season 41, Game 97):
Some myths say the treasure of the Nibelung was hidden under a promontory called this, on the Rhine near St. Goarshausen
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Will Yancey, a lecturer of history from Banquete, Texas![]() |
Jay Fisher, a government relations manager from Lisle, Illinois![]() |
Evan Dorey, a data analytics director from Toronto, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today’s second Champions Wildcard semifinal—as, hopefully, the Jeopardy! airing schedule returns to normal today—features Evan Dorey, Jay Fisher, and Will Yancey. Will Will be able to join fellow Second Chance qualifier Drew Goins in the finals, or will we see a 1-day (Evan) or a 3-day (Jay) champion there? My personal cheering loyalties are with Evan for geographical reasons today, but all three of these players have been very fun to watch.

According to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, Der Marner (a famous 13th century German itinerant poet and singer) would sing that the Nibelungen treasure was under the rock named Lorelei. Other myths detail an enchanting woman of the same name who is associated with that rock; one was adapted into Heinrich Heine’s “Die Lorelei”.
This clue has a very “you either know it or you don’t” quality to it; I could see this Final playing anywhere from 0- to 3-for-3.

This may have been discussed in my German Literature class, but more likely I knew it from the classical music by Liszt and Clara Schumann.
I wonder if that was ever mentioned in ‘Gilmore Girls’? Since I binge-watched it later (since I could not watch during the weekly original airings), I hope I would have remembered it if they had.
Die Lorelei was my answer. I assume that they would take it even though your explanation suggests that Lorelei (with the “die”) relates to the woman and not the rock. But “die” is the German article “the”.
Agreed. I believe articles are acceptable even in other languages.
I couldn’t come up with the name Lorelei, but I knew the history and I said “siren’s rock”, but I doubt that would have been accepted, even though some of the legends do involve sirens, so I counted this one a miss.
An “either you know it, or, don’t know it” Final Jeopardy. I didn’t know it, do not recall ever hearing of this myth. An incomplete, and, a miss for the semifinals so far.
I don’t claim to be up on Gen Z slang, but I believe Jay’s sobriquet is “Hot Politician Zaddy.”
That’s what I thought, too.
I had nary a clue for FJ. Pretty much knew when I saw the category, I was done. LOL
And, I’ll tell you, if that game of Jeopardy doesn’t excite you, then nothing will (no pun intended). Awesome game!
Retro congrats to Will on the most impressive win and I can’t wait to see him, Drew, and 1 other finalist starting Thursday. Going to be good!
