(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Diana Gabaldon is the author of the series of novels that began with 1991’s Outlander, featuring World War II nurse Claire Beauchamp, who travels through time and finds romance with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. The series was also transformed into a TV series starring Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan. With time travel serving as a major part of the series, it comes as no surprise that she would believe that the Loch Ness Monster could appear as a result of a time portal below.

On her website, she recounts a letter that she sent to Olivia Perfetti, who was a sixth-grade student in Pittsburgh at the time. Basically, Gabaldon said that the Loch doesn’t have enough biomass to support a breeding population of monsters that size, which means the only way Nessie could exist is if there was a “time-portal under Loch Ness, which would occasionally allow a prehistoric creature to pass through it.”

  1. Nope. Never heard of her. 🙁

  2. Didn’t get this but should have, because I knew that Outlander has to do with Scotland and time travel and also knew the author’s name. This one shouldn’t be too difficult for contestants of this caliber.

    • I was pretty much in the same circumstance as you were, but did know her name (though I also began with “that Outlander lady” but began parsing through versions of her last name until I hit the right one). [I knew the “Diana” part right away but I kind of get her last name mixed with the star of the show until I manage to untangle them in my mind. I’ve never read the books nor seen the show, but they’ve gotten SOOO MUCH publicity over the years.]

So I showed the clue to my girlfriend, and she said, “I don’t know.” I then said, “Name the first female author that comes to your head when I mention time travel.”

She replied, “Is it Audrey Niffeneger?”

  4. Never heard of her. BTW, is writing “Unsure” a first?

  5. I have to admit I would’ve ranked Neilesh 3rd in my power rankings of the players coming into finals. He’s really impressed me in the finals; doesn’t blink in the face of pressure.

  6. FJ……nope!

Retro congrats to Neilesh on this way that now has him on the brink of being the TOC champion. Will tomorrow be the night he does it? Tune in and we’ll see! 🙂

  7. This has been a great Tournament. Interesting to observe the vagaries of luck combined with skill. Had Adriana found the final DD (and answered correctly), she would have won the game.
