Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

Celebrity Jeopardy returns tonight at 9:00 (8:00 Central) on ABC and CTV2 with our first semifinal, between Margaret Cho, Jackie Tohn, and W. Kamau Bell. I think most prognosticators would put Margaret as a commanding favorite to win tonight’s game after an incredible performance in the quarterfinals—one that had the audience’s hearts in their collective mouths with some gutsy Daily Double bets. But these games are played for a reason, and there’s a lot of variance in this game—there are six Daily Doubles on that board, and anything can happen on them! Victory is not a guarantee for anybody in this game. I can’t wait to see what happens in this one.

3 Comments on "Celebrity Jeopardy! Game Recap – Wednesday, April 2, 2025"

  1. “Props to Margaret for going for it, even though it didn’t work out for her.”

I thought the same thing at the time, and while I don’t expect Margaret to have done any of this math on stage, it seems the move was justified, based on your numbers here.

If she wanted to guarantee the lead going into Final, she needed to get above 27200 (22700 + 4500). That would need a wager of more than 10700. Missing with such a wager would have dropped her below 5800, leaving her with a potential maximum of just under 10300, not enough to break Kamau’s lock had he put the buzzer down.

Those Coryats really tell the story though. On one hand, Margaret was done in as much by her misses after ringing in as by the Daily Doubles. On the other, Kamau outbuzzed her and significantly out-Coryatted her. He’ll formidably oppose whoever comes out of the other two semifinals.

  2. Kamau played a strong game but Margaret was one correct response away from having the lead based on big DD wagers. Was a fun game to watch last night. Loved Margaret’s response in Final Jeopardy. Players interacting with each other and making jokes creates a very different atmosphere which I think is enjoyable.

  3. I was disappointed in Margaret Cho for not figuring out DD6 because “gondola” was so obvious! I’m guessing that as it did not come to her immediately, the clue was so wordy that it intimidated her into not being methodical in coming up with a possible response when actually without thinking about saving books in a flood, only “Venice” and the one word I cannot recall [and cannot find a J Archive to look in, but am certain it was in that clue], but was something like symbolic or emblematic (or maybe even ubiquitous) just screamed “gondola”.

It was clearly a “thing” vs a person or place. Regardless of the word I can’t remember [or POSSIBLY just imagined], to come up with a stab at any response rather than no response, think “what THINGS can I associate with Venice?”…canals, gondolas, bridges…then “which of these MIGHT could be used to save books in a flood?” Aha, “gondolas” won’t be an absurd response even if I am not correct.

I believe this was an exemplary clue. If anyone is gathering example clues to teach potential contestants HOW to play rather than to JUST depend on learning a bunch of facts, this one belongs in that repository.

I’ve always liked Margaret Cho [‘All-American Girl’ deserved at least one more season!] and I also loved Margaret’s FJ! response in this game.
