Today’s contestants:
Oli Hein, a voiceover artist from Gloucestershire![]() |
Jan Scocroft, a retired languages teacher from Somerset![]() |
Dan Afshar, an events manager from Kingston upon Thames (5-day total: £16,400)![]() |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
After yielding the time slot for a couple of days for ITV’s racing coverage, Jeopardy in the UK returns with 5-day champion Dan Afshar doing battle against Gloucestershire’s Oli Hein and Somerset’s Jan Scocroft.
Dan’s advantage has been that he’s got the timing of the signalling device figured out; he’s been in first on nearly 50% of all clues. One thing, though, is that he’s averaged nearly 9 unforced errors (an incorrect response after ringing in, as opposed to a forced error being an incorrect response on a Daily Double or Final Jeopardy) per game thus far; a high number even taking into account that a British episode now has 106 clues instead of the American 61.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I don’t care what the “official” recipe says. I’m not going to stop adding garlic to my bolognese sauce recipe.
- “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was from 1945’s Carousel and was a #1 song for Gerry and the Pacemakers (1963), The Crowd (1985), Robson and Jerome (1996) and Michael Ball and Captain Tom Moore (2020).
- No wagering suggestions are provided due to today’s game being a runaway.

This FJ was a lot easier for me than today’s FJ in the U.S. version of the show. 1945 Broadway show => “Carousel” => “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Isn’t it also traditionally sung by the fans of the Liverpool FC?
It is! And Celtic as well. It’s become quite heavily associated with football here, and the 1985 release was recorded for charity after 56 people were killed in a horrible fire at Bradford City’s ground.
I got this one although it took about 20 of the 30 seconds to work it out, so I’m not convinced I’d actually have written it out in time if I’d really been there. I think it’s a great clue because it requires a bit of lateral thinking, it’s not straightforward at all. It was the 2020 one that got me there in the end (like the 1985 release, it was for charity, the Covid-19 relief effort in this case, as Captain Tom who had just turned 100 broke the record for the oldest artist to top the UK charts by a very long way).
Really enjoyed having Jeopardy! back today and congratulations to Dan – strong performances all round.
Another pre-emption has come up – it doesn’t appear that there will be an episode on Good Friday (18 April) as there is more racing that day.
I’m glad to hear that two of the four UK No.1 singles were done for charity because I was worried about the UK psyche to have made such a morose-sounding song a No.1 single not once but four times. [Yeah, yeah, I know its lyrics’ meanings are “uplifting” but the music sounds mournful.]
