Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, May 1, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 1, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Stage) for Thursday, May 1, 2025 (Season 41, Game 169):

Their show ended its off-Broadway run in 2025, after 34 years, 17,800 shows & 82,150 gallons of paint

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Scott Summers, a librarian from Apex, North Carolina
Scott Summers on Jeopardy!
Julie Holt, a Latin teacher from Knoxville, Tennessee
Julie Holt on Jeopardy!
Ben Ganger, a data analyst from Goshen, Indiana (2-day total: $41,815)
Ben Ganger on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Ben Ganger goes for win #3 in today’s game against Knoxville’s Julie Holt and North Carolina’s Scott Summers. Ben will need to continue his strong play in order to have the best chance of returning for postseason play; as things stand right now, he’s right on the bubble for Champions Wildcard, with only a 46.67% chance of qualifying for that event.

With regard to postseason play and the top of the pyramid—Jeopardy! Masters—I am feeling slightly concerned about overall viewership last night. In my experience, there is generally a relationship between site traffic here and ratings, and I get the sense that things are definitely going to be down from last season. I also believe that very few people have pinpointed the actual reason for the drop in ratings. I believe the #1 cause of the drop in ratings for the primetime offerings this season is the fact that ABC moved the time slot from 8:00 to 9:00. It is my belief that 9:00 is simply too late of a time for the average Jeopardy! viewer to have the brainpower to feel like they can play along at home. Even my own parents save the episode until the next morning to watch. For primetime Jeopardy! to be successful, it needs to air as early in the night as possible—and 9:00 is not conducive to that. It has absolutely nothing to do with overexposure of the format—and I’m sure some on Reddit will make that case over the next week—and everything to do with the fact that it is airing too late at night for the average viewer to productively watch.

In February 2025, the 30-plus year run of the Blue Man Group at New York City’s Astor Place came to an end. The famed performance art company still has shows running in Las Vegas, Boston, Berlin, and Shanghai.

I hadn’t heard the news that the New York production had ended, but I was still able to puzzle this one out from the pieces in the clue.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • With his win today, Ben took his Tournament of Champions chances from less than 2% to more than 72%.
  • In the interview portion, Ken is the best I’ve ever seen at pretending to be really interested about the contestants’s nerdy stories.
  • For those viewers who get squeamish at the depictions of injuries, today’s game is not going to be the most enjoyable experience.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

I saw Blue Man Group at Universal Studios Orlando once, but got it correct on one word: “paint”

As for Masters I had it DVR’d because my favorite NHL team was playing last night. They got eliminated so watching Masters at 9pm on Wednesday won’t be a problem for me moving forward. 🙁

    • I had no idea they were playing off Broadway, but like you, with ‘paint’, I had no other guess.

      • From the fact of 81k + gallons of paint, I guessed Blue Man Group, as well. Didn’t know that the New York ahow had still been running, I don’t even know if the Chicago production is still running.
2 for 4 this week on Final Jeopardys on daily, syndicated Jeopardy. Will see how I do on the Final Jeopardys during Masters play, when I watch my DVR recording.

        • The Blue Man Group show closed in Chicago this past January and moved to Orlando.

    • My favorite NHL team was eliminated on Thursday, so I wasn’t home and able to watch this game. My team is the Kings and yours is who Patrick?

On your commentary concerning Primetime Jeopardy!’s ABC time slot of 9pm instead of 8pm, my thinking is that ABC made some serious primetime scheduling mistakes last fall by delaying the current season of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Press Your Luck for ESPN simulcasts of Monday Night Football games. For next season, Hulu or Amazon Prime Video should take over Celebrity Jeopardy! and Jeopardy! Masters since one of them is expected to get the streaming rights to weekday Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. For now, viewers can get Primetime Jeopardy! episodes on ABC on Hulu the next day if they are not able to stay up until 10pm the night of the airing on ABC.

    • See my comment about ratings for the second night of the NFL draft vs. “regular” network programmimg.

  3. I didn’t watch Jeopardy Masters. I just didn’t care. One nightly show with “regular” contestants is sufficient.

    • ditto for me.

    • To each their own. I love the storylines, tougher clues, and more impressive gameplay!

    • I agree with Ted Mark.

    • Both of you are missing out on quite a bit – there’s some seriously good television in there!

      • Definitely with you on that MasterDoge!

      • And I assume the clues are at least somewhat more difficult and I like the additional challenge. It’s not that I have THAT good of percentage right in regular/daily Jeopardy!, but the more difficult the clue, the more gratifying it is WHEN I get one correct (such as triple stumpers).

  4. RE “… Ken is the best I’ve ever seen at pretending to be really interested about the contestants’s nerdy stories. …”

What’s the quote: it’s important to be sincere even if you have to fake it.

Ken does say he “loves” a lot of the stories; maybe he does … or he figures he’s getting paid to be interested, so why not?

  5. Igor Freytor | May 1, 2025 at 12:54 pm |

    Like a 200 or 400 point question.

  6. On masters, will you be doing recaps on geeks who drink again this year?

  7. I should have gotten this FJ from “paint” but didn’t. Now, if the clue had cited the number of rolls of toilet paper used, I would have gotten it immediately. (This will only make sense to people who have actually seen the show.)

  8. Robert J. Fawkes | May 1, 2025 at 7:17 pm |

“Gallons of paint” was all that was needed to point to the Blue Man Group. As Igor wrote, a $200 or $400 question in the first two rounds.

As for lower ratings, I attribute that to the absence of one James Holzhauer. Love him or hate him, he is the most interesting player. I’ll still watch it, but with less interest than if James were competing. People like to either root for him or root against him but he does draw viewers, in my opinion. Personally, I root for him with Victoria and Matt being my runners-up. Oh, yeah, and Brad and Craig and Mattea and another Matt and Chris and ……….

  9. I loved Blue Man Group as soon as I saw them on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and so did my son after I introduced him to what I’d taped (because I was sure he would love them even more than I did). That was why they immediately came to mind, but it’s a good thing I couldn’t think of any other possibility because I didn’t realize they had started by 1991 (because I did not recall that my son had been as young as he was when they first appeared on “Leno”).

  10. I wasn’t able to watch this show, as I was at an official LA Kings watch party at a local bar in Old Pasadena. 1 stop for me off the LA Metro Line and a short walk and I was there.

I am happy to see that Ben got win #3!

And, as for nerdy stories. I was at the bar and one of the crew from the Kings came over (she does in game intermission reports) and we got talking hockey and how she got interested (she’s 1/2 my age) and we got talking about my jersey and hat and very nerdy tales ensued. Great fun, in spite of my Kings being eliminated from the playoffs.
