Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, July 10, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the July 10, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Chart Toppers) for Thursday, July 10, 2025 (Season 41, Game 219):

His mother named him after her dream car but he topped the charts in 2019 under this moniker

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jolynda Chenicek, a teacher from Tallahassee, Florida
Jolynda Chenicek on Jeopardy!
Austin Hobbs, a library specialist from San Angelo, Texas
Austin Hobbs on Jeopardy!
Scott Riccardi, an engineer from Somerville, New Jersey (5-day total: $144,902)
Scott Riccardi on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Yesterday, Scott Riccardi became the 8th automatic qualifier for the 33rd Tournament of Champions and the 287th 5-time champion in the post-1984 history of Jeopardy! in North America. Of those 287 champions, Scott is 37th in terms of adjusted 5-day total, and while his 127 correct responses thus far isn’t close to any sort of record, it is still a very strong total. Your challengers today are Austin Hobbs of San Angelo, Texas and Jolynda Chenicek of Tallahassee, Florida.

Correct response: Who is Lil Nas X?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Lil Nas X was born in 1999 as Montero Lamar Hill; his mother named him after her dream car, the Mitsubishi Montero; at the age of 20, his country-rap song “Old Town Road” shot to the top of the music charts; his 2021 album, self-titled Montero, contained the #1 songs “Industry Baby” and “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”.

Especially considering that Lil Nas X had a platinum album and #1 song containing his name, this is absolutely a valid subject for Final Jeopardy. Current music has been the subject of clues for years and this should not change. Why do I feel the need to write these defenses? Because I see the clickbait that gets written with headlines like “Jeopardy! Under Fire…” and I firmly believe that a large swath of the viewing audience—thankfully, the regulars here in my comment section are not included in that group—is starting to feel the neurological effects of having inhaled too much lead paint and leaded gasoline during their collective formative years. Certainly, I am reminded of the following Final Jeopardy! clue that aired on February 20, 1998: “This pop star born in 1970 was named for a song in “Paint Your Wagon”—with the correct response, Mariah Carey, having been named for “They Call The Wind Maria” from that musical.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I would like to reiterate that while I am going to suggest the Shore’s Conjecture wager below, I absolutely do not whatsoever think that Jolynda needs to be vilified online tonight for her wager. I wish to unequivocally state that she did not make a mistake with her wager, and anyone that suggests otherwise is incorrect and potentially libelous.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Jolynda $7,800 Scott $6,400 Austin $2,200)

Scott: Your best chance of winning comes today with a bet between $1,401 and $1,999. (Actual bet: $1,401)

Austin: To have any chance of winning, you need to bet at least $600. (Actual bet: $1,200)

Jolynda: Standard cover bet today is $5,001. If you really think that Scott might bet small here, a bet of $600 covers his entire bet range (and is the bet suggested by Shore’s Conjecture.) (Actual bet: $5,001)

21 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, July 10, 2025"

  1. Was between Lil Nas X and The Weekend for this one getting caught up with Blinding Lights. Ended up going with Lil Nas because I was pretty sure The Weekend’s given name wasn’t any sort of car.

  2. Well, the good news is I snapped straight to the answer even though it wasn’t prior knowledge.

The bad news is I have “Old Town Road” stuck in my head now.

  3. Clueless. Thinking of ‘dream’ car names that are also ‘people’ names, I was trying to think of a singer who was named Shelby.

    • I said Little Red Corvette.

    • There is one, Shelby Lynne. I thought of her right off because I remember her name because I always assumed that she was one of Loretta’s sisters (but she’s not) and I have a relative who recently named their daughter for the Shelby GT500, but the 2019 didn’t fit and she doesn’t sing under a different name. Shelby Lynne may actually have been named for the Shelby GT500 as she was born the year after it came out!

  4. This was an easy get for me being that I watch the Billboard charts. So in 2019, Lil Nas X had that huge hit “Little Town Road” that spent 19 weeks at #1. Super easy for me.

    • “Old Town Road”! I think you probably got it mixed up with the band Little Big Town without noticing you had.

  5. Was completely focused on the car part of the clue and not the “topped the charts in 2019” part. I had no idea Montero was also the name of a car. TIL!

    • I was mostly the opposite but it was pretty hopeless as I am not that familiar with names of desirable cars or actual names of artists who go by something else (except a few too old for the 2019 “topped the charts” clue, though I guess it did not outright say “for the first time” but I assumed it was implied).

  6. Calvin S. Lin | July 10, 2025 at 12:53 pm |

I follow the Billboard Hot 100 somewhat religiously, so this was an easy get for me. It was considered a big deal when Shaboozey’s “The Bar Song (Tipsy)” tied “Old Town Road” for the most weeks at #1 (a record that will likely be broken either this December or next by “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

    • Thomas G. | July 10, 2025 at 1:27 pm |

In my opinion, Mariah Carey breaking the 19 week record is in a category of its’ own for “All I Want for Christmas is You”. The other two 19 week #1 titles all happened during ONE CHART RUN, not 7 or 8 or more chart runs.
Also I do not think that Jelly Roll was popular in 2019, as I did not hear from him until early last year!!!

Go Scott, go, win more games…

      • I’ve never really paid attention to the charts or kept up with when songs, singers or bands were on them. I generally learn about hot artists by seeing them on late-night or SNL. [For example, I liked Vampire Weekend when they were new on the scene, but now get them mixed up with The Weeknd.] The only CD I ever bought within the year of its debut was St. Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley. I knew Jelly Roll was popular before early last year [he made it into the Billboard 100 almost exactly 3 years ago] but he is a “home town boy”. I have no idea why I guessed Bruno Mars like Austin did.

    • I followed it in the late 80’s/early 90’s when you still had to buy the magazine. 🙂

  7. I went with Post Malone and immediately regretted it once I saw the answer. Knew Lil Nas X’s name was Montero but didn’t remember it is a car.

  8. The term arcane comes to mind when it comes to clues like this. I’m a stranger in a strange land so to speak.

  9. Robert J. Fawkes | July 10, 2025 at 8:12 pm |

Somewhat surprised that none of these youngsters remembered Lil Nas X’s had such a big hit in 2019. That’s the only way I got this as I did not know what his mother named him. It was only the reference to his music that I got the correct response. I suppose if you don’t follow music much, you might not pick up on that.

Even though the title of the song from “Paint Your Wagon” was written as “They Call The Wind Maria,” as I remember it, “Maria” was pronounced as “Mariah” as Mariah Carey spells and pronounces it. Is my memory faulty or does it simply use that as an alternate spelling?

    • Michael+R | July 10, 2025 at 9:55 pm |

My dear uncle Stan was in the Hollywood Carpenters Union, and he worked on everything from TV shows to movies, and he built dozens of homes in the Burbank/N. Hollywood area. He used to joke about working on “Paint Your Wagon”…he said, I didn’t just paint the wagon, I BUILT the wagon!

    • The actor who sang that song in “Paint Your Wagon” played the father-in-law car dealer owner in “Fargo.”

    • Robert, if I had remembered that Lil Nas X had a big hit in 2019, I would have “gone with” him because sometimes some people’s dream car is a classic car and he could have shortened Nash to Nas! [This is what I thought after finding out the correct response, before finding out about Montero. I just forgot to reply to you then.]

  10. Let’s go Scott! End the week as a 7 day champion!
