The scourge of misinformation has struck Jeopardy!.
An article in the Portland Press-Herald, published this past weekend, first floated the idea that Jason Singer and wife Susan McMillan might become the first married couple to win on the show. It should also be noted that as of 12:30 PM EDT on July 2, 2025, the only outlet to contact Jeopardy! itself on this had been ABC—and the show made it clear to ABC that the show did not track such a statistic.
Unfortunately, such a claim that has been made by Singer and others is known by most longterm diehard fans to be incorrect, with the most famous example being Justin and Kristin Sausville, with both halves of that married couple going as far to reach the Tournament of Champions.
Even taking into account the stipulation put forth by Singer that the couple needed to be married prior to either partner appearing on the show, there are certainly multiple cases, including Amy Stephenson/Scott Bateman, Dan Pawson/Andrea Saenz, Tim Hughes/Laura Hughes, and Ryan Alley/David Rigsby, with further couples coming forward to the alumni community with their stories at this story continues to develop.
Kristin put out a statement today on Facebook regarding the situation, stating “there is something really surreal and honestly kind of sinister in watching part of yourself be erased in real time.” And, quite frankly, I have to agree—there is definitely erasure happening here. And it’s disappointing to see.
All attempts to contact the Press-Herald, by email or telephone, for any sort of comment or statement on this situation have failed to receive a reply. (Editor’s note: As of 4:10 PM EDT on July 2, 2025, the Press-Herald stories on Jason and Susan now reflect accurate information.)

Thanks for mentioning Amy & I! We definitely knew about the Sausvilles before us (and others). And now, of course, we have the power couple of Julia Collins and Roger Craig!
We all know about Julia and Roger—but that doesn’t fit the “married before the appearances” stipuation.
