Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Bestselling Authors) for Tuesday, October 14, 2025 (Season 42, Game 27):

At age 26 in 1917, she passed the assistant’s exam for London’s Society of Apothecaries

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Chris McGinn, an editor from Indian Land, South Carolina
Chris McGinn on Jeopardy!
Evan Argyle, a data scientist from Salt Lake City, Utah
Evan Argyle on Jeopardy!
Allegra Hill, a foreign affairs professional from Washington, D.C. (1-day total: $23,601)
Allegra Hill on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Allegra Hill is your new Jeopardy! champion after picking up $23,601 in yesterday’s holiday matchup. Today, she faces off against challengers Chris McGinn and Evan Argyle (who, as you’d expect, is pictured in an argyle sweater in his contestant photograph).

Agatha Christie, one of the world’s most famous detective and crime fiction writers, passed the Assistant’s Examination for the Society of Apothecaries in 1917; this exam would be equivalent to one for a pharmacy technician in North America. Studying for this examination would give the author the knowledge of poisons, many of which would later come up in her works. She would also serve in hospital dispensaries during both World War I and World War II.

To me, this seems like a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue, one that I also believe is necessary for the overall health of wagering strategy. We’ve seen a couple of instances recently of leaders betting on their opponents to get Final Jeopardy incorrect, and straightforward Final Jeopardy clues such as this one does wonders in keeping leaders betting aggressively during Final Jeopardy.

Evan found DD2 early in the round, adding to his score; Allegra found DD3 in a distant third two-thirds of the way through the round; she said immediately after the clue that she should have wagered more. (And I agree.) Evan led going into Final—but everyone was in contention.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I suspect she’ll chime in in the comments, but I assume that Allegra’s Final Jeopardy bet was a math error at some juncture in her calculations. (It’s definitely possible to do that under the pressure of the lights.)
  • Today’s J!6 clues can be found at the monthly archive.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Evan $17,400 Chris $11,000 Allegra $8,600)

Allegra: Bet at least $4,200 to pass Evan if he’s incorrect in Final—but because that falls below Chris if she covers, you do have lots of room to bet more if you’d like. (Actual bet: $4,100)

Evan: Standard cover bet is $4,601. (Actual bet: $4,601)

Chris: Bet at least $6,201 to cover Allegra. (Actual bet: $11,000)

13 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, October 14, 2025"

  1. Quite straightforward for me, especially after confirming the birth year based on the age in 1917, since my mom was a huge Agatha Christie fan.

  2. back to back correct guesses.
“Studying for this examination would give the author the knowledge of poisons, many of which would later come up in her works”…. nice bit of info

    • Studying for this examination would give the author the knowledge of poisons, many of which would later come up in her works – that rings a bell. Was it a FJ clue a few years ago?

      • Maybe, but it was familiar to me from seeing several different “PBS” [technically BBC, I assume] shows about Agatha Christie in the last few years [I think in ’23 and ’24, but some have been rerunning this year.].

  3. Yes, it was a straight-forward clue. Too bad it’s become the exception, rather than the norm.

  4. Oh goodness – it wasn’t my math but my strategy which was wrong. I was trying to get in between Evan and Chris instead of covering Evan. Considered wagering my full score but then got back to my flawed strategy. Oops 🤣

And yeah, should’ve bet more! In my defense, I was fairly sure I’d get it wrong and just wanted to make it to final.

    • Thank you for coming here to comment Allegra. It was fun to watch you in these 2 Jeopardy games and I loved your exuberance when you won. I have been to 5 tapings of Jeopardy now and have nothing but the utmost respect for all of you that come onto this show. 🙂

  5. It’s so sad to see Evan go; I loved his style and energy. But congrats to Chris on a game well played and getting my favorite Mystery author right!

  6. It was fairly to get this one, author from first part of 20th century and female. Pharmacology background. Narrowed it down to mystery writer and immediately thought of Agatha Christie.

  7. Robert J. Fawkes | October 14, 2025 at 6:29 pm | Reply

In tonight’s final, the clues (pun intended) pointed directly to Agatha Christie.

Sorry to see Allegra leaving so soon; she was a delight and I was hoping to learn how her parents decided to give her that name.

  8. My guess on Allegra’s name is a feminized version of “allegro”. Based on what seems like a musical family and that “allegro” means to play something lively and cheerfully! Great contestant!

    • Robert J. Fawkes | October 14, 2025 at 7:35 pm | Reply

Yes, joyful, cheerful, lively, positive energy and vivacity all make sense. She certainly lives up to her name. Would like to have seen more of her.

  9. Well, I guess best selling authors and I didn’t see eye to eye on this one! I failed at FJ! 🙁

Retro congrats to Chris on her win and we’ll see if she can get win #2 tomorrow. 🙂
