Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Animation) for Wednesday, October 8, 2025 (Season 42, Game 23):
Phil Vischer, creator of this show, originally had a candy bar as the lead until his wife nudged him in a healthier direction
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Chris Turner-Neal, a writer from New Orleans, Louisiana
|
Josh Ng, a middle school teacher originally from West Nyack, New York
|
TJ Fisher, a marketing specialist from San Francisco, California (4-day total: $76,524)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
On September 25, Steven Olson was unsuccessful in his attempt to become the 289th player to become a 5-time Jeopardy! champion in the post-1984 history of the program. Today, TJ Fisher makes the same attempt as Josh Ng and Chris Turner-Neal attempt to stop him. Interestingly, TJ is also looking to become the 8th player with 5 runaways in one’s first 5 games, and the first since Ben Chan in 2023; the other 6 are Rick Knutsen (2001), Robin Carroll (2000), Jonathan Groff (1995), Chuck Forrest (1985), Mike Day (1985), and Elise Beraru (1984).

When setting out to create a computer-animated Biblical-themed series, Phil Vischer originally had the stories told by an anthropomorphic candy bar; limitations in Softimage 3D in the early 1990s meant that it would be technically more difficult to have characters with arms, legs, hair and clothes. However, Phil’s wife suggested that the target audience, Christian parents, would be much happier if the characters promoted healthier eating habits. Thus, a switch to vegetables was made and VeggieTales was born.

Andy’s Thoughts:
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Chris $12,700 TJ $12,400 Josh -$200)
TJ: Bet between $601 (covering all of Chris’s viable small range) to $11,799 (in case Chris covers). (Actual bet: $11,799)
Josh: (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)
Chris: Standard cover bet is $12,101. If you really feel the need to bet small, bet between $2 and $299, thereby forcing TJ to be correct. (Actual bet: $1,500)

This is one where I forgot they started as CGI-animation because, for some reason, my brain associated them with puppetry. But it was the first name to come to mind, and after spending way too long trying to think of anything else, I just decided I’d write it down, probably panic, not have a better answer, and it would still be there at 30 seconds.
But hey, after the last few FJs I’ll take what I can get, amirite?
my answer for yesterday when reading in the NY Times was “solar radiation”. I assume that would not have qualified as a correct answer?
I doubt it.
Finally came up with VeggieTales. Watched these numerous time.
Great trivia concerning the players who have strung together their first 5 runaway games, including the 22 years where that did not happen. Again great trivia.
The category paired with the clue made this an instant get for me. Always enjoy seeing the art form of animation get some love.
I don’t understand Chris’ wager.
Some wagers can be best explained by “this contestant lost all semblance of strategic thought due to the stress of the situation and thus picked a random number out of thin air.”
The contestants on Jeopardy have to be bright people or they wouldn’t qualify for contestants. They also must have watched Jeopardy for some time and understand the game and betting strategy. Chris had the most money going into final Jeopardy, got the correct response and didn’t win. Should never happen.
Stupid response. It’s easy, sitting on your couch, to judge the betting. When the pressure is on you can’t know what goes through someones mind.
Working with kids through church, I’ve seen a lot of “Veggie Tales” over the years so this was a pretty easy get for me, even at my age. Phil Vischer was a smart man to follow his wife’s suggestion. Kudos to Mrs. Vischer for her excellent suggestion. I just can’t see these stories being done with candy bars now that I’m so accustomed to Veggies.
If I’m in the lead going into final, I think I’d always go with the standard cover bet unless I’m absolutely sure I don’t know the category at all. We’ve seen, at least, two of these episodes in recent memory where the leader didn’t and it cost them the game. Of course, that’s great for the second place contestant as they have taken advantage of that opening and got to come back the next day. Congratulations to TJ on becoming a 5-day Champion and cresting $100,000 in winnings. He also accomplished his goal of being in the ToC. Great day all-around for him. Four runaways and one lucky break didn’t hurt. After four runaways, you can’t say he didn’t deserve it. Good going, young man.
The Pete Weber clue for his remarks in winning the BPAA US Open in the Jeopardy round mentioned the 2nd time that Pete was on the Sports Center Not Top 10. The first time was in the late 1980s, while also winning the BPAA US Open, when the top of the trophy fell to the ground while Pete was lifting the trophy after being interviewed by Chris Schenkel. Though Pete is a great Bowlers, he’s not as great as his dad Dick Weber.
Ah, I wondered why the name ‘Pete Weber’ sounded kind of familiar as a champion bowler, but not exactly. I didn’t even try to think why, just assumed I was remembering wrong.
[Perhaps comedian PETE Holmes having recently played a professional bowler in ‘How We Roll’ (which I liked) influenced my confusion as it has been a long time since I used to watch professional bowling on TV and was familiar with DICK Weber.]
In that tournament that Pete won where the eagle fell off the trophy and fell and broke into pieces was quite an amazing tournament for Pete. He barely made a cut into the top 60 (58th I believe), made the match play cut on the number, (24th of 24), and then made the TV show in 5th place (of 5) and won 4 matches to win the title. Totally improbable.
I also know the guy that finished 12th in that tournament, Joe Merrill.
I had no idea on this FJ.
