Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Movie Characters) for Wednesday, November 19, 2025 (Season 42, Game 53):
The novelization of a 1977 movie awarded this character a medal at the end, righting a perceived wrong
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Matylda Urbaniak, a law student from Queens, New York
|
Josh Chen, a stay-at-home dog dad from Arlington, Virginia
|
Harrison Whitaker, a researcher originally from Terre Haute, Indiana (6-day total: $182,600)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Harrison Whitaker hit a bit of a speed bump yesterday in his sixth game, being in the minus during the Double Jeopardy round, but he recovered enough to lead going into Final Jeopardy and pull out victory #6. That performance, though, could demonstrate to today’s challengers Josh Chen and Matylda Urbaniak that Harrison is very beatable. One major weakness in Harrison’s game right now is the Daily Double; in six games, he is only 6-for-11 on those clues. On the more positive side for him, he is 6-for-6 in Final Jeopardy, which may require someone to be ahead of Harrison entering Final Jeopardy in order to defeat him.

A long time ago, on a movie screen far, far away, moviegoers saw the end of Star Wars (retconned to be Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope), where Chewbacca is the only main character to leave Yavin 4 without a medal of honor. Fans have since been upset with this, even though the novelization of the movie, ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster from the script, lets the Wookiee win a medal. Thus, it does appear as though Chewie’s medal was an oversight that fans picked up on immediately.
With Harrison at 6-for-6, part of me is starting to wonder if this will be the first Final Jeopardy clue for him to be incorrect on. That being said, I am proud to admit that I—who, over the years, has been notorious for getting incredibly easy Star Wars questions incorrect in various competitions and podcasts—was correct on this Final Jeopardy clue.

Harrison got off to a good start in this round, but Josh pulled back thanks to a True Daily Double. Harrison found DD3 and bet tentatively (understandable, considering his struggles on these clues in his run), but it was enough to still be in control of the game. While Josh tried valiantly to make Final Jeopardy matter, Harrison picked up clues 26 through 30 in the round in order to make sure that Final Jeopardy was moot.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Harrison 25 correct 2 incorrect
Josh 15 correct 1 incorrect
Matylda 10 correct 0 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 6 (0 today).

Matylda $5,200 – $0 = $5,200 (Who is Skywalker Kocham was ABJTL)
Josh $12,800 – $5 = $12,795 (Who is hi mom, dad, + jem)

I saw 1977, thought Star Wars knowing that Alan Dean Foster wrote the book after the movie, and said Luke Skywalker. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that movie. Over 48 years, in fact.
Seriously? A fictional character?
I did not reply to MarkO. I referred to the question’s answer. I focused on real-life people.
I mean, I think that’s on you, especially facing a category of “Movie Characters”…ost of them would be fictional…
Yes, I see that now. I’ll take my “Duh!” moment!
Right there with you at over 48 years ago, MarkO. I was able to get as far as “Star Wars,” but I couldn’t sleuth out what character didn’t get a medal. Ran out of time before deciding it was probably Chewbacca but didn’t settle on that until after time was up. Saw the Original Trilogy and a couple more of the other two trilogies but never saw the full “Star Wars” franchise.
I guessed Luke Skywalker forgetting that Chewbacca did not get a medal in the movie.
Maybe Harrison has never seen Star Wars: A New Hope…Hopefully he has…
I must be suffering from the “Mandela effect”, as I thought Chewie had a medal on him at the end of the movie. 😮
Reading 1977 and medals at the end, I went immediately to Star Wars. I wanted to dismiss it, having the (apparently) false memory of Chewbaca being the fourth recipient. I even see his vocalization while being awarded. Memory is tricky.
I went with Chewy anyway not having a reasonable plan B.
And here’s the closing clip, and it’s true that only Han and Luke were given medals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yixG8pfncOs
Thank you for including that link. Harrison Ford looked/was so young! It didn’t seem that long ago that I first watched it at the theater.
I also guessed Luke Skywalker.
Hi! How are you able to know what the FJ clue is without knowing whether Harrison got it right or not?
It’s published in numerous locations prior to the episode, most notably in The New York Times each weekday. Today, by way of example, was on page C4 (in the Arts section).
The wording of the FJ clue is interesting, since “righting a perceived wrong” implies it was correcting something from the film, when the novelization was released in late 1976 about 6 months before the film was.
Also, has it seemed like guest categories have been appearing more frequently in the DJ round lately? In the past, it seemed like they were in the opening round more often. IIRC, Andy also commented that the opening round would be extended to ensure those categories were completed if contestants shied away from them, which could end up cutting DJ short and leaving some clues unrevealed. I wonder if it’s a matter of tighter editing, if the Jeopardy crew is pushing for faster clue reading from guests or something else, since contestants are doing a great job at clearing the boards.
Hello to all!
I really have been enjoying watching Harrison’s run… he is closing in on Tom Nissley’s position on the Jeopardy winnings list for regular play!!
I wish him continued success.
The phrase “correcting a historical wrong” is meaningless, as the novel, in which Chewie gets a medal, was in fact published BEFORE the film.
