Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Jargon) for Friday, March 20, 2026 (Season 42, Game 140):
Former NFL QB Joe Theismann once joked that he had shouted this word over 10,000 times, but had no idea what it meant
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
David Ley, an immersive theater director originally from Ithaca, New York
|
Sinecio Morales, a student originally from Rockford, Illinois
|
Jamie Ding, a bureaucrat & law student from Lawrenceville, New Jersey (5-day total: $131,802)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Jamie Ding is now a 5-time champion; many years ago, he’d have been retired. But that isn’t any fun for ratings, really—and so he gets to see how many more he can win. David Ley and Sinecio Morales are your challengers hoping to stop him—and, if what I’ve heard from some quarters is any indication, Sinecio may well be primed to take down our champion. Sinecio also has a strong quiz bowl background, and with our champion having had his worst game statistically thus far, there’s a reasonable chance that our streak might end today.
If you watch the show on a CBS affiliate, March Madness coverage is very likely to interrupt your viewing experience today. Check your local listings, or Matt Carberry’s Google sheet. Much like yesterday, there are markets hat will be airing the show at 10:30 AM Eastern today (1.5 hours earlier than the usual “first airing” out of WBBJ in Jackson, TN); thus, results will be posted earlier than usual today. And, as always, if your station has pre-empted the show entirely, remember that you can watch tonight’s episode beginning tomorrow morning on both Hulu and Peacock. (Crave TV in Canada.)
Thirdly, today sees use getting bonus Jeopardy!, as the second quarterfinal of Celebrity Jeopardy! All-Stars airs tonight at 8:00 (7:00 Central) on ABC and CTV. Tonight’s quarterfinal will be between Macaulay Culkin, Steven Weber, and Jackie Tohn.

Correct response: What is “hut”?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The use of the word “hut!” as an interjection originated in the military, as Merriam-Webster defines it as “used to mark a marching cadence”. By the 1950s, football quarterbacks decided to take the military term for their own use, as it was a short and sharp syllable easily audible over a distance. Prior to “hut”, the term “hike” was popular, with “hike” originating with John Heisman’s teams in the 1890s.
I’m quite enjoying the “stealth” sports questions as of late; this one should be very playable for a general audience. We’ll see how this plays in-studio, though.
