Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Produce) for Friday, May 1, 2026 (Season 42, Game 170):
The name of this fruit commemorates an Australian gardener who died in her 70s in the 19th century
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Stephanie Perkins, a math teacher from St. Louis, Missouri
|
Harsha Hebbale, a crash safety engineer originally from Troy, Michigan
|
Kate Brody, a novelist from Los Angeles, California (1-day total: $17,599)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
We have a new champion at the leftmost lectern tonight in novelist Kate Brody (whose debut novel Rabbit Hole had been the subject of a clue in 2024); looking to unseat her as champion are challengers Stephanie Perkins and Harsha Hebbale. I thought that Kate was a very good player—she picked up nearly two dozen correct responses yesterday and kept all three Daily Doubles away from defending champion Greg Shahade.
Additionally, this is a reminder that our latest quarterfinal of Celebrity Jeopardy! All-Stars, between Margaret Cho, Patton Oswalt, and Robin Thede, will be taking place tonight at 8:00 (7:00 Central) on ABC and CTV.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Maria Ann Smith, who had immigrated to New South Wales from East Sussex in the 19th century, had purchased a small orchard in the 1850s. On that orchard, an unintentional seedling, crossed between a French crabapple and another apple in the orchard, had sprung up. When Smith realized that these green apples were excellent for both cooking and general consumption, she began to develop the cultivar that was eventually named the Granny Smith after her.
I was personally familiar with enough parts of the story of the Granny Smith apple that I was able to get this easily; however, there are certainly clues here for those who aren’t as aware. “died in her 70s” implies an older woman, and then it might become “name a fruit named after an older woman”.

Game Recap:
Losing $4,000 on a Daily Double midway through Double Jeopardy was just a small speed bump in what turned out to be a start-to-finish runaway victory for Stephanie today; Kate had an opportunity to pull close with the last Daily Double, but giving the Greek name of the goddess instead of the Roman sent her back to $0 and ultimately out of contention.
Scores going into Final:
Stephanie $18,800
Harsha $6,000
Kate $2,800
Tonight’s results:
Kate $2,800 – $2,800 = $0 (What is old lady fruit?)
Harsha $6,000 + $381 = $6,381 (What is granny smith apple?)
Stephanie $18,800 – $2,200 = $16,600 (What is Crabapple?) (1-day total: $16,600)

Game Stats:
Stephanie $21,800 Coryat, 22 correct, 2 incorrect, 36.84% in first on buzzer (21/57), 1/1 on rebound attempts (on 1 rebound opportunity)
Harsha $6,000 Coryat, 12 correct, 1 incorrect, 22.81% in first on buzzer (13/57), 0/0 on rebound attempts (on 1 rebound opportunity)
Kate $8,800 Coryat, 14 correct, 1 incorrect, 24.56% in first on buzzer (14/57), 0/0 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
Combined Coryat Score: $36,600
Stephanie Perkins, to win:
3 games: 56.691%
4: 32.139%
5: 18.220%
6: 10.329%
7: 5.856%
Avg. streak: 3.309 games.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Especially considering Ken’s note about Kate having received a very last-minute Call, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a factor in Kate potentially receiving a Champions Wildcard invite.
- Due to today’s game being a runaway for both first and second, no wagering suggestions need to be posted.
- Today’s J!6 clues can be found at the monthly archive.
