Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The 20th Century) for Wednesday, May 20, 2026 (Season 42, Game 183):

51 days after this event, Edward Teller said the United States had lost “a battle more important & greater than Pearl Harbor”

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Chris D’Angelo, a content manager from Washington, D.C.
Chris D'Angelo on Jeopardy!
Allegra Rosenberg, a writer originally from Skokie, Illinois
Allegra Rosenberg on Jeopardy!
Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska (10-day total: $221,902)
Tristan Williams on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Yesterday on Jeopardy!, Tristan Williams became the 21st player in Jeopardy! history to win at least 10 games in regular play; the previous 20 have all won game #11. Will that streak continue today, or will Allegra Rosenberg or Chris D’Angelo, our challengers today, end that amazing run?

One thing I have once again noticed—and this is, quite frankly, a damning indictment of many within this Jeopardy! community—the reaction of many Americans on social media to Tristan’s run compared to Jamie Ding’s run is absolutely shocking. I have not seen nearly as many negative comments surrounding Tristan than I have about Jamie—and I think we all know exactly why that is. And to those who like to tell me about how wrong I am and how I shouldn’t be making anything about race—you are just as much of a problem, as you are providing cover for the actual racists to act with impunity.

When the Soviet Union successfully launched the first artificial satellite—Sputnik—on October 4, 1957, it sent the United States of America into a shocked panic. The Americans were immediately seen as losing the “space race” to the Russians at that point, leading to an immediate change in funding priorities; within a year, the National Defense Education Act was passed, whose preamble stated, “The present emergency demands that additional and more adequate educational opportunities be made available.”

I don’t know how this Final Jeopardy clue will play today; it feels a little on the tougher side to me, but I’ve been wrong before.
