Due to its strategic location on the Black Sea, the Crimean peninsula has been fought over and changed hands numerous times over the millennia. The Greeks settled the area near what is now Sevastopol in the 6th century B.C, while in the 19th century, the Russians fought against an alliance of the Ottomans and Western European states for control in the famous Crimean War. By the time of the Russian Revolution, the area declared independence in 1917 as the Crimean People’s Republic, before becoming the Crimean Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic in 1945. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, the government in the area asserted sovereignty, and since 2014, the area has been disputed between Ukraine and Russia, with Russia using the area to launch its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
I’ll be honest: it feels like there are a lot of moving parts to this clue, and I’ll be impressed with any contestant who can get through all of them to reach a correct response.
