Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, May 7, 2026

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 7, 2026, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Plays & Playwrights) for Thursday, May 7, 2026 (Season 42, Game 174):

The first version of a 1960s play by this man had a slightly different title, ending with “Meet King Lear”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Robert Yan, a language expert from Huntsville, Alabama
Robert Yan on Jeopardy!
Helen Yoas, a retired librarian from Williamsport, Pennsylvania
Helen Yoas on Jeopardy!
Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska (1-day total: $20,000)
Tristan Williams on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Tristan Williams picked up 30 correct responses on yesterday’s episode despite going only 1-for-4 on the major clues. Today, he faces off against Alabama’s Robert Yan and Pennsylvania’s Helen Yoas.

The Unified Prediction Model, not particularly impressed with the net -$5,000 on the Daily Doubles from Tristan yesterday, is only giving our champion a 52% chance of victory today. That said: if Tristan does manager to turn that negative number into a positive (and can do so consistently), we might be setting up for a run as champion. If not, though, our carousel of champions may very well continue today.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Tom Stoppard’s famous absurdist play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead was originally titled Rosencrantz and Guildernstern Meet King Lear and was a one-act short play, before Stoppard took the characters out of the dementia-suffering Lear and expanded it into a full-length play, named after the Ambassador’s announcement to the Danish court shortly after Hamlet’s death in Act 5, Scene 2 of Hamlet.

This play has always been a favorite of the Jeopardy! writers; this would definitely be one of those “this will be easier to those who have been longtime fans of the show” clues.
