(Quite frankly, I’d be hard-pressed to say that anyone is twice as good at Jeopardy! as Yogesh is.) In any case, Peter goes for victory number seven today against Wilson Li and Dan Laine.

The modern scientific history of hyponsis, according to Britannica, began in the late 18th century by German physician Franz Mesmer, who treated patients in Vienna and Paris using it. However, Mesmer was discredited due to his belief that it used an occult force. The term “hypnosis” was coined by James Braid in the 19th century after the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos (brother of Thanatos), to refer to the trance-like state resembling sleep, but is induced by a person (a hypnotist) whose suggestions are accepted by the subject. Many psychoanalysts of the 19th and early 20th century were intrigued by hypnosis, with even Freud studying it, but most ended up rejecting it due to the difficulty in hypnotizing some patients.

A pair of missed Daily Doubles today from our champion, including a $5,400 one late, meant that things were extremely close entering Final Jeopardy, with Wilson Li second and Dan Laine third.
Final Jeopardy proved to be a Triple Stumper, which given the scores should have given Wilson the victory today. However, Wilson bet too much, and Dan Laine’s intelligent small wager gives him a victory with just $2,193! He gets the chance to play again tomorrow, though, and he’ll do that.
