Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Northern Europe) for Thursday, July 2, 2026 (Season 42, Game 214):
This country is said to have more islands than any other in the world; there are 30,000 just in the archipelago named for its capital
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Andy Briseño, a novelist & associate professor from Natchitoches, Louisiana
|
Caleb Groen, a law & policy student originally from Thousand Oaks, California
|
Richard Nguyen, a research attorney from Placentia, California (2-day total: $36,801)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Considering his pair of victories and his status of “giant killer” (a term certainly preferred by Alex Trebek), Richard Nguyen certainly has to be on the shortlist of people coming back for Champions Wildcard next winter. Before then, though, he has a chance to guarantee that postseason spot with a win today if he defeats Caleb Groen and Andy Briseño.

I’m going to be frank, here: this is an absolutely terrible Final Jeopardy clue that appears to have been written in such a way that is technically pinned and correct in order to avoid contestants officially challenging the clue, but today’s Final Jeopardy clue should never have left the writers’ room. Different countries have different standards for measuring the number of islands it has. Sure, the writers have really shoehorned this in there, by giving us a category of “Northern Europe” and “is said to”, but geographic superlatives that are reliant on how one chooses to measure or count an item had no place in reasonably-written trivia competitions in the 2010s, and even moreso in the 2020s. This goes for coastline measurements, this goes for river sizing, and this goes for island counting. How are we to be sure that Sweden has more islands than Canada (especially Arctic Canada) or even the United States? (Alaska only counts named islands—who knows how many islands Alaska has if you use a more lenient counting method!)
In any case, Sweden is a lovely country who have treated many of my friends well over the years, and I hold no ill will towards them over this Final Jeopardy. Its Stockholm Archipelago, one of many Baltic Sea archipelagos, contains a number of both inhabited and uninhabited islands.
