I’m blogging from home today (what a concept!) after replacing my modem. In a strange way, I’m gonna miss how I did it last week – typing painstakingly on my phone, and adding links and images from McDonald’s where I could get wifi.
My Coryat from this weekend’s rerun, which originally aired 7-15-13, was 30000 (32800 without negs). The first time I played, my score was 23200 (26400 without negs).

Mr. Trebek referred to Johnna as “Johanna” at the top of the show, but I wouldn’t have noticed it if Mr. Trebek hadn’t said later, “It’s ‘Johnna.’ I keep…I’m slipping up.” I’m sure she’s used to it! Johnna’s a medical student, BTW, so I wonder if she was as happy as I was to see TV Physician and Heal Thyself.
I first said what Rani did, then changed my response to the correct one before she responded, then took it back on this clue in Piggybacking: “Piggybacking on a 747, space shuttle Endeavor says goodbye to this, its old launch facility.” I was sorry it was a triple-stumper in that case.

I said what Johnna did on this one in TV Physician, and was surprised at first when it was wrong: “In 2013 TV shows on CBS & the BBC respectively, Lucy Liu & Martin Freeman played doctors with this surname.” And my eyes widened when no one seemed to ring in right away on this one in Piggybacking: “This place in Omaha whose logo is seen here traces its roots to the efforts of Fr. Edward J. Flanagan.”
Rani got it though. She got the next clue right too, and the next one was the Daily Double in the same category.

Rani wagered 1000 on this clue, an instaget for me: “No longer on the Catholic calendar, this saint is often shown carrying the Christ child on his back.” I thought Rani’s incorrect guess was a sensible one, though. In fact, I don’t know how a non-Catholic would know this.
I don’t work with IVs but I knew this from nursing school, still in Piggybacking: “In the piggyback type of this hospital setup, a secondary line adds intermittent doses of a new medication.” The medical student got this one right.
I was really excited about this clue in 4-Letter Edibles: “It’s the 4-letter name for the dessert seen here, topped with raspberries.”
Johnna got it right. And like her, on this next clue in the same category, I questioned how to pronounce my response: “A Greek specialty similar to Shawarma, lamb roasted on a spit, shaved off & put in a pita has this 4-letter name.” She said, “What is a gyro, hero, g-y-r-o?” Mr. Trebek said there were 3 acceptable pronunciations! Then I got this triple-stumper in the same category: “Vegans love this veggie that’s basically a primitive cabbage.”
Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning with 7 clues left on the board. There were 3 left covered.

James surprised me and Mr. Trebek went he dove for a 2000 clue, in Husbands & Wives. The first 3 clues in the category were triple-stumpers! Mr. Trebek then hinted that James should change categories. I’m not counting this right even though I responded correctly, because I took it back at the last second: “He met Mary Godwin in 1812, but they didn’t wed until 1816 because he was still married to his first wife, Harriet.” I got this triple-stumper in I C U R A 1-Letter Response. “Notation for the least valuable chessman.”
James was cruising in Potent Poe-tables until he got one word wrong in his response to this one: “The violent killings of an old woman & her daughter are the title crimes of this detective story.”
I gasped when Johnna had a word wrong in this response, in “me” Tunes, but she corrected it in time!: “Back off! In 1981 the Police had proximity issues with this top 10 hit.” I’m glad I wasn’t on the stage when I responded with “Blow Me” to this one in the same category: “This No. 1 hit by Pink begins, ‘Right from the start you were a thief, you stole my heart.”
I was surprised this was a triple-stumper in Newspapers: “This media company owns over 80 newspapers, including USA Today & the Des Moines Register.” The next clue, in the same category, was a Daily Double, and it was James’s.

James wagered 3000 on this clue. I might’ve wagered it all: “In 2013 this paper won a Pulitzer for its breaking news coverage of the Aurora theater shooting.” Unfortunately James didn’t get it. I did after much consideration. Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning then with 5 clues left. One would be the Daily Double! Rani found it in All Systems Go. There were 2 clues left after this one.

Rani wagered 3000 on this clue: “Largely gone since the 14th century is this system in which a fief holder took an oath in a ceremony called homage.” Rani got it right, and this was the last clue. I wonder if she regretted not creating a lock, at the time!
The Final Jeopardy category was Nobel Laureates. This was the clue: “The 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner from this country was under arrest at the time of the award.” I misread it, as I am wont to do, but I’d have been wrong anyway. James and Johnna gave the same response, and they were wrong. It was sad to see James wave goodbye. Rani’s response was wrong too, for that matter. James lost everything, Johnna lost 7000, and Rani lost
2611. So she is a 5-time champion and she moves up on the ToC list.
