Austria was one of the Great Powers of Europe, dating back to the days of the Habsburg Dynasty; the House of Habsburg, and its Habsburg-Lorraine main line, ruled Austria until the end of World War I. Following the war, the First Republic was created; the Anschluss saw Austria annexed by Nazi Germany. After World War II, Austria was occupied by the Allies and the Austrian State Treaty re-established Austria as a sovereign state in 1955. The Second Austrian Republic announced a declaration of neutrality in that year. Austria, per its current constitution, is permanently neutral.
