Sam Ryan on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Sam Ryan is your new Jeopardy! champion and giant killer after a runaway victory over Caleb Groen in yesterday’s game. Today, he faces off against Grace Biermann and Joey Sisk. If the numbers are any indication—Sam had 10 correct responses in the bottom two rows of the board in yesterday’s game—our challengers may be in for just as difficult of an opponent today with Sam than Caleb would have been. That being said, anything can happen on the Alex Trebek Stage!

Final Jeopardy! Category: The 20th Century

Final Jeopardy! Clue: Turning points in this event were the U.S. Navy boarding the Marucla & a cargo ship called the Kislovodsk altering its course

Correct response: What is the Cuban Missile Crisis?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

After the United States placed nuclear missiles in Turkey and Italy, both within range of Moscow, the Soviets responded by placing nuclear missiles in Cuba, well within range of the United States. When the Americans discovered this after a spy plane captured evidence of the launch facilities, a naval blockade of Cuba was ordered in order to prevent further missiles from arriving. Eventually, the blockade was challenged, resulting in the Lebanese freighter Marucla being boarded to inspect its cargo and being permitted through the blockade, while the Soviet cargo ship Kislovodsk elected to reverse course and return to the Baltic. Eventually, the US and USSR came to a diplomatic compromise and the withdrawal of the nuclear missles on both sides; most historians believe that this is the closest that the Cold War came to escalating to full-scale nuclear war.

This is an interesting Final Jeopardy clue, one that determines how much everyone knows about the two major events in Cuba during the Kennedy administration (that being the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis). If you don’t know specifically what happened here, you’re left flipping a coin and could very well be incorrect.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: State Borders; Education; It’s Alliterative; “G” Songs; Avengers; Assemble!)

Gracy went conservative when she found the round’s Daily Double; her correct response was one of 8 in the opening segment for her and she had a big lead through 15. At the interviews, the scores were Grace $6,800 Sam $1,800 Joey $0.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Grace 8 correct 0 incorrect
Sam 3 correct 1 incorrect
Joey 1 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Joey has been using his Jeopardy studying for song inspirations.
Grace regrets not getting seagull insurance with her cheese toastie in Scotland.
Sam has been trying to get on Jeopardy for over 20 years.

All three players played well after the break as Grace continued to lead. On the opening board, Grace picked up 3 of the alliterative terms.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Grace 11 correct 0 incorrect
Sam 8 correct 1 incorrect
Joey 8 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Grace $7,600
Sam $4,200
Joey $3,000

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Narrator Of The Novel; Hit The Sauce; -Gates; Beyond The Sea; British TV Crime Shows; At The Art Institute Of Chicago)

Joey found DD2, picking up clue value. A protracted search began for DD3; eventually, it was Grace who found it. I was certainly surprised (especially considering how conservative she went on DD1) by her $10,000 wager. A correct response on that put the game away for Grace and gave her $30,000 entering Final Jeopardy. Grace also ran the Art Institute category and got 3 in sauces, while Joey got 3 in narrators.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Grace 25 correct 3 incorrect
Sam 14 correct 3 incorrect
Joey 12 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 11 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Grace $30,000
Sam $8,600
Joey $7,400

All three players were correct in Final Jeopardy, with Grace going for the conservative bet again, just $2,000. She’s your new champion and will be back tomorrow to defend her title.

Tonight’s results:

Joey $7,400 + $1,300 = $8,700 (What is the Cuban Missile Crisis)
Sam $8,600 + $6,201 = $14,801 (What is the Cuban Missile Crisis?)
Grace $30,000 + $2,000 = $32,000 (What is the Cuban Missile Crisis?) (1-day total: $32,000)

Grace Biermann, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the July 21, 2026 game.)
