Correct response: What is Yukon Territory?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

Yukon Territory was created in 1898 due to the Klondike Gold Rush; 100,000 people migrated to Yukon after gold was discovered in 1896. The Canadian government required anyone entering the new territory to possess a year’s supply of food, which would often weigh half a ton on its own. Many of the migrants didn’t arrive until 1898 itself, and a large number of them were unable to find gold themselves. The rush died down after gold was found a few years later near Nome, Alaska, and many went to the gold fields there.

What also complicated matters was the fact that at the time, both Canada and the United States lay claim to territory along the Alaska Panhandle. The Alaska boundary dispute wasn’t resolved until 1903, and Canadians were so distrusting of the Americans’ handling of the situation that they turfed Wilfrid Laurier’s Liberal government in the 1911 election when it proposed reciprocity with the United States, a situation not helped by Congressional speeches by Democrat Champ Clark and William M. Bennett. Canada and the United States did not reach a free trade agreement until the late 20th century.
