Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Novel Characters) for Friday, February 9, 2024 (Season 40, Game 110):

It’s this character who’s spoken of in the line “Reader, I forgave him at the moment & on the spot”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Patrick Curran, a consultant from Washington, D.C.

Jesse Matheny, a customer success specialist originally from Huntington, Indiana

Emma Hill Kepron, a librarian from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today’s fifth quarterfinal features Emma Hill Kepron, Jesse Matheny and Patrick Curran. Both Emma and Patrick were 2-day champions, while Jesse won a single game. The prediction model certainly thinks Patrick has a strong chance of doing well in this event—he’s 5/6 on Daily Doubles, having picked up a net $18,800 from them over his three games. If that keeps up, this game should be wrapped up well before Final Jeopardy for him. (If Emma is still in contention, though, she might have the advantage in Final, being a librarian and all.)

Correct response: Who is Mr. Rochester?

Reader, I did not get this Final Jeopardy clue correct, having not read Jane Eyre or being familiar enough with the work.

Mr. Rochester is the master of Thornfield Hall in Charlotte Brontë’s famed 1847 work Jane Eyre, who ends up marrying the title character at the end of the work. (Before you get mad at me for the spoiler: this work is nearly 200 years old now.)

I think the biggest clue here in this Final is the “Reader, I…” construction, often used considerably amongst the terminally online. In my opinion, that certainly would be a reference to Jane Eyre and may certainly help to point someone in the right direction, even though the more famous usage of the construction in the book is the beginning of the famous final chapter: “Reader, I married him.”

(Categories: 21st Century Science; ____ Of ____; American History; Let’s Have A Word; Same Title, Different Lyrics; Add A Letter: Geography Edition)

Jesse wasn’t fazed by Patrick’s big lead; it took all of 5 clues for him to claw it back! A correct Daily Double from him then saw him extend the lead. The battle continued though, as Patrick picked up $6,000 on the last one to retake the lead going into Final!

Patrick 23 correct 1 incorrect
Jesse 18 correct 0 incorrect
Emma 9 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Jesse $17,800
Emma $6,800

Emma was the only player to successfully name Rochester; however, Jesse made a small wager to keep Emma locked out—and that was enough to make sure Jesse advanced to the semifinals!

Tonight’s results:

Emma $6,800 + $6,793 = $13,593 (Who is Jane Eyre? Rochester?)
Jesse $17,800 – $4,100 = $13,700 (Who is Pilgrim?) (Semi-Finalist)
Patrick $22,200 – $13,401 = $8,799 (Who is Mr. Darcy)
