The laser, invented in 1960 by Theodore H. Maiman, definitely caught the public’s eye shortly after its invention. However, it was seen to lack practical use for many years after its invention. However, in 1974, a laser scanner was determined to be the most efficient way of reading the newly-introduced Universal Product Code (barcode) being introduced into grocery stores. While it took manufacturers and grocers a number of years to fully introduce the system, its introduction was said to increase the profits of stores overall by about 40%. The second primary usage of the laser—the critical “home audio” part of this clue—are Compact Disc players. In a CD player, an infrared laser beam scans the underside of a recorded Compact Disc to play high-fidelity audio at home. This technology was later expanded to use shorter-wavelength lasers to read more data from DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Both the scanned barcode and CD didn’t become ubiquitous in North American life until the 1980s.
(And, no, I don’t believe “barcode” is correct here—there is undoubtedly zero convincing evidence anywhere of a barcode itself revolutionizing home audio. Remember that a correct response on Jeopardy! needs to satisfy all parts of the clue.)
